Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
In my role as a Technology Expert Labs Intern within the Systems and Storage team, I support the team by keeping key tracking files and pipeline data up to date. This involves pulling information from the UK contract database, creating new opportunity entries, and updating them with Statements of Work and contract details as they progress.
On a day-to-day basis, I manage the server tracker and storage pipeline tracker, create IDs for consultants so they can log their time accurately, and assist in tracking remaining hours for contracts to help consultants manage their workloads. I also work with other departments to identify new opportunities, prioritise contracts, and keep our Monday Board updated.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given a good amount of responsibility throughout my placement, which really helped me grow and develop my skills. From keeping key tracking files up to date and managing pipeline data to creating IDs for consultants and assisting with contract tracking, I was trusted to carry out tasks that directly supported the team’s work. I also worked with other departments, learned new tools, and contributed to projects such as the data redaction task.
Having that level of responsibility made me feel valued, and it gave me real insight into how my work impacts the wider business.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes — during my placement, I’ve both learned new skills and developed my existing ones. I’ve gained hands-on experience with IBM tools which has helped me understand forecasting, pipeline tracking, and opportunity management in a real business context. I’ve also built on my advanced Excel skills, applying them to analyse data, create reports, and manage trackers efficiently.
Beyond technical skills, I’ve developed my collaboration and communication abilities by working closely with different teams, clients, and stakeholders. I’ve also improved my organisational skills through balancing multiple projects and deadlines, as well as my public speaking skills by volunteering to present during team meetings and workshops.
Overall, I’ve not only added new tools and techniques to my skill set but also strengthened the ones I already had.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a great deal of support and guidance throughout my placement. My manager and team were always approachable and willing to answer questions, which made it easy to learn and take on new responsibilities. I was encouraged to reach out for help whenever I needed it, and colleagues often took the time to walk me through processes or share their expertise.
In addition to day-to-day guidance, I was given opportunities to shadow projects, attend training sessions, and join regular check-ins to track my progress and development. This balance of support and autonomy really helped me grow in confidence and work independently while knowing help was always there if needed.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to IBM
My advice would be to be proactive, curious, and open to learning. IBM offers a huge range of opportunities, so make the most of them by asking questions, networking with colleagues, and getting involved in projects beyond your immediate role. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone — volunteering for new tasks or presenting in meetings can really help you grow.
Also, take advantage of IBM’s learning resources and mentorship opportunities; they’re invaluable for developing both technical and soft skills. The more you put into the experience, the more you’ll get out of it.
