Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Internship involves 2 rotations on two different trading desks in the risk function. Track key metrics for the trading subdesks overtime such as delta, gamma and vega. We shock portfolio's to see what the stress PnL would be in various qualitative scenario's like a recession or tariffs etc. Day-to-day for interns is more project based with various BAU that involves giving updates on what's happening in the market.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Lots of opportunity for responsibility and a chance to make a real impact. Taking this opportunity is important as the return offer is very competitive as with sales and trading.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Developed more on coding skills that I had got from University, mainly in Python. Learnt lots about the financial markets, options pricing, exotic derivatives etc. Was exposed to lots of trade ideas and how to hedge trading strategies. Developed presentation, communication and Excel skills massively.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Lots of support and guidance given. Both of my 2 managers were excellent at providing feedback and the initial training was very comprehensive. Regular check-ins with HR and more senior management who gave great advice.

Very positive in my teams. Largely felt true in all the interactions I had. Work culture seemed very supportive.

I enjoyed my internship massively and was passionate about the projects I completed. I had expected a far worse work culture.

What advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan

Emotional intelligence is often times valued more than intellectual so important not to neglect soft skills. Ensure you are familiar with the basics of the role that you apply to - e.g. derivatives, bonds, securities etc. for markets. DCF's etc. for IB.
