Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role involved working on an internal tool. For this, I attended daily standups, worked with React, Python, wrote tests with vitest and used CI/CD pipelines to automatically deploy and test upon commit.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a lot of responsibility. I had to manage the project I was assigned as well as coordinate other people who were helping out. For example, I had to plan and host UI/UX meetings and take minutes so that we could design a well thought out wireframe for the website.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learned how program in React as well as how to write secure APIs with X509 Authentication. I learned how to use Jira and how agile works within a Kanban team. I learned how to test, document as well as writing quality code with the help of mutation analysis, SonarQube and eslint. Finally, I learned how to use the clean as you code paradigm.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I recieved a lot of support. Not only did me and my manager have weekly 1:1s, but we also sat directly next to each other so I got a lot of support from him. Additionally, my team were really welcoming and helpful.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere was great, everyone clearly had passion for what they were doing and I feel I was taken care of during my internship. Not only did we have many insightful events and learning opportunities, but we also got really nice socials so we could meet the other interns in a more relaxed setting. Finally, we spent an entire day volunteering for a local charity.

What advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan

Be yourself, don't pretend you know things that you don't. You don't need to come knowing everything, just come with a growth mindset and they will teach you! Also, it's nothing like what you'd expect a big bank to be, it's very clear they care about their employees and want to support them in anyway they can.
