Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
A truly varied role, with different tasks day to day. A key focus is to support the Dealer Network to achieve the marketing strategy for the year; this can be through enhancing marketing activations, working with an external agency, segmenting CRM data to gain insights, and onsite event management. Additionally, regular tasks are around using data and CRM via Salesforce to understand the customer journey and sales funnel, and identifying key focus areas to help nurture clients. Many tasks are organisational - supporting with the management of the finance budget and trackers, having ownership of the UK marketing fleet cars and bookings, and hosting meetings / taking minutes for both internal colleagues and externals. Highlights include supporting with regionally-led events such as Festival of Speed, and new product experiences.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
The role allows you to take complete ownership and responsibility of a variety of tasks and elements, as you wish. This increases as you become more knowledgeable in the role and wider team, and settle into the internship. One example of this is having complete ownership of the finance system - raising POs for suppliers, liaising with finance to send payments and tracking these individual elements. Additionally, I owned and hosted a bi-weekly meeting with the whole regional team from an early stage. At times the responsibility challenges you to take on a new task, and be outside of your comfort zone, the best place to learn!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
The placement has allowed me develop a range of both general skills for a corporate workplace such as communication, prioritisation and working across multiple tasks simultaneously; as well as specific skills transferable to marketing roles - working with data, activation planning and execution, content briefing, understanding a finance system and strategic skills. The internship offers the opportunity to develop a skills outside of your core department if you wish, and understand how various areas of the business operate.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
There was constant support and guidance the whole way through my internship, from both my immediate and wider team. Everyone is always happy to help answer questions and support my development, whether that is explaining something further, delving deeper into a topic, or giving guidance on my skills. There is opportunity to put your hand up, and get involved in projects to aid your development and interests, enhancing my placement journey further.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Overall, Rolls-Royce is a corporate company, that runs under a business structure, with more serious environments when needed. However, mostly the company culture is very inspiring - everyone is always welcoming and friendly, happy to help, or give you their time to talk further about their own career, or a certain topic within the business. The atmosphere in the office is very positive, with lots of collaboration and open working occurring, which helps with enhancing my understanding of topics, and widening my knowledge.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My placement year was amazing!
Looking back, I am so glad I chose to undertake a placement year/year in industry, as it has allowed me to apply many of the theoretical learnings in university to a real-life, dynamic business environment. I was lucky enough to be involved in a variety of amazing projects, and have so much more confidence in my skills heading into future employment.

What advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK
I think my number one piece of advice would be to understand what you want to learn from the placement year, and don't be afraid to admit the gaps in your knowledge during the application stage! Most employers want to see someone who is enthusiastic to learn, and will make the most of their time, to develop their skills.
But also enjoy the process, and be yourself!
