Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
Year 1 - This was all based in the Training School. 4 of the 5 days were based in the workshop on different rotations such as Electrical, Electronics, PLCs, Milling, Lathing etc. A day was dedicated as our college day where we had 3 modules spread throughout the day. Some of these modules involved Mathematics, CAD, Business etc.
Year 2 - This was the start of my 3 month placements around the BMW MINI plant. My home department is laboratory based which involves process analysis and material testing.
Another placement was in the Paintshop which again involves a lot of process analysis and using different methods including 3D printing to improve existing processes. I've had to work on different projects which involve quite a bit of CAD and 3D prototyping, which makes sense as the degree I'm working towards is Manufacturing Engineering.
Currently I've had to return to my home department due to an overload of work. This has also involved in me travelling to other plants to help out with some mechanical testing.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I've mostly enjoyed the apprenticeship and also think this as it's going by quite quickly. I enjoy the work based jobs more than the college work, as I find practical based tasks more interesting. However, the 4 day work based and 1 college day schedule works in my favour as I find it to be the perfect balance for me. There can be times where placement is running slow due to less work, which can make it not as enjoyable, but I just use some free time to catch up on ongoing work, which I think is quite important and has helped me. I have enjoyed some of my college modules more than others, specifically CAD and Mathematics, mainly because I find them the most relevant to my work. Other modules I find not as enjoyable as it can involve having to balance a lot of different assignments at once.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
My knowledge has increased drastically. As I'm an apprentice, it's been the first time where I've worked or been involved in a big manufacturing company like BMW, and I have realised there is a lot more that goes on in each department than I had initially thought. I came into the company with little to no knowledge about the different processes but my placements have helped change this by developing my awareness of the roles and responsibility of the different departments and how they must ensure smooth processes to result in the production a good quality Mini.
Some Developed Skills:
Communication
Working in a team
Attention to detail
Following instructions
Taking the initiative
Confidence
New Skills:
I've been able to develop new skills in working independently on jobs involving machinery that I've never used before.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The work based placements are generally well structured so far and any changes are communicated in advance. The placements are organised in a document that apprentices have access to so we know and understand what the upcoming placements might be like which results in an ease of mind.
The college experience has been up and down but I think it could be better if assignments for every module weren't all released at once, but rather they were handed out based on a schedule. This would help manage the workload better because sometimes we won't have any assignments and then suddenly there are a few handed out at once. During some of the college days we have not followed a proper schedule with some modules over running into others and completing work for a specific module in the working time of another module.
Overall, it's been good.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
The BMW apprentice managers are supportive with any concerns and hold regular meetings to keep the apprentices updated with changes and for them to have the opportunity to address any issues.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
The tutors themselves are quite helpful whenever you have any concerns. Some go as far as offering 1:1 support to go through certain topics you are unsure about. Some tutors also do well in providing valuable feedback, but it could be more consistent across the different module leaders.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I think some of the modules have been very relevant to my placement and for me I have been lucky with the timings of my modules and placements, as often the topics being discussed during my college day would also come up in placements and I would feel confident in taking on the job due to my knowledge having been developed through college leaning. A big area that has translated to my work based placements has been the CAD work.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There have been optional social/sports events throughout my time at BMW as an apprentice. These are good for building your network and just getting involved really.
There is also a charity team which you can join to help out with different events to raise money.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I think it's one of the biggest mainstream car manufacturing companies in the UK and from personal experience, it's been the greatest opportunity for me to develop new skills and knowledge in such a short frame of time.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?

I think when applying, it's important to fill in all the required information about yourself to good detail.
I would also recommend looking into the BMW goals and how the different plants across the UK operate.
During assessment centres, I think it's important to just be yourself and not try too hard. Also giving others the chance to speak and get involved is also important.
