Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
- Running reports in line with service level agreement deadlines & managing stakeholders expectations
- Joining daily stand-up meetings to provide updates on any ongoing tasks/ projects as well as providing assistance to the wider team
- Collaborating in a migration project involved in repointing a collection of reports from an on-premise database to Databricks - using SQL
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was satisfied with the level of responsibility assigned to me during my placement. About half of my experience involved working directly under my line manager, providing regular updates multiple times a day. The other half gave me a degree of autonomy, as I worked on a project with a different team while maintaining good communication with my line manager.
Overall, the responsibility felt well-balanced—allowing me to make a meaningful impact without becoming overwhelming.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received support and guidance whenever I needed it—about nine times out of ten—and I always knew who to approach. It was rare that my requests for help were overlooked or forgotten. On the few occasions this happened, it was usually regarding more significant matters, such as asking for work that better aligned with my goals.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was generally professional but with a relaxed atmosphere, which made it easy and comfortable to communicate openly with both my immediate team and other colleagues around the office. The dress code was flexible—based on dressing for your day—so I always felt comfortable and confident at work.
However, I did notice there were fewer social events compared to what friends at other companies experienced. Even the team Christmas dinner which was 2 hours away from where I am based, was a pay-for-yourself arrangement, which felt less inclusive than I might have expected.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Overall, I’ve enjoyed my placement experience. The first couple of months felt a bit slow, and the work early on wasn’t particularly engaging. However, the main project I’ve been working on for the majority of the placement has felt meaningful and impactful, and I believe it will benefit me in the future. One of the highlights has definitely been the people—I’ve really enjoyed working with such a supportive and friendly team.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Nationwide to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Nationwide
Some general advice for all placement - if you haven’t heard back from HR in a while, don’t hesitate to follow up with a polite email. For example, I had to do this two months after passing the video interview to secure an assessment centre invitation.
Also, make sure to do your research on the company beforehand. For instance, the building society I applied to places strong emphasis on working towards their strategic goals and values curiosity about the role and projects you’ll be involved in. Showing that mindset can really set you apart.
