Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My day-to-day role involves supporting colleagues with client communication for treasury advice. This includes client distribution of emails and technical/economic updates, dealing with client queries and completing benchmarking regarding client treasury and finances. For example, writing credit updates on banks and other financial institutions by analysing credit rating updates from rating agencies, such as Fitch and Moody's. Also, completing client credit profiles and benchmarking to help prepare for company-client meetings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my CIPFA classes. Being able to meet like-minded people on the same course and working together for the same qualification is satisfying. It also allows for collaboration during revision, motivating each other for further success. Additionally, many of my fellow programme classmates are part of my client organisations. This helps us build a strong foundation for potential future business work together.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I learnt how to use Bloomberg Terminal setup, and extract and analyse data from it to satisfy client needs. This then lead onto aiding with excel formula setups and knowing how to represent data visually and concisely. Working at this company has also helped improve my teamwork and communication skills. This is because of the nature of financial work we are involved with, having to convene with colleagues regularly to discuss the relevant financial news and how that impacts our work and clientele.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My CIPFA course is well structured, with a clear timeline set out for each module, detailing the syllabus, study time and exam technique required for each one. The modules are laid out in such a way that also allow us to build on previous module knowledge. The classes comprise of all essentials, teaching content and then allowing us to apply the learnt content to exam questions.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My company is very supportive with my course. They regularly hold training/revision sessions to recap and enhance the knowledge learnt, and assists us with applying them practically into the work the company does daily.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
CIPFA are very helpful, making sure they are on hand to help with student needs when asked for. They have a dedicated forum space for each module that allows for student-teacher interactions, and provide a personal private tutor that holds meetings on occasion to help with study progression and workload.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Some relevant modules are very useful, such as financial accounting and business reporting. They allow me to better understand the data and information provided by clients, and the process for benchmarking we provide to them. It also enhances my knowledge of financial statements representation for clients, such as with liability benchmarks (specifically understanding where values come from and how to categorise them) and calculating fair values for client investments.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many opportunities for extra-curricular activities at work. My company regularly organises social activities, allowing us to build stronger relationships. These included sporting activities and many professional networking events. These events also allow me to see how other businesses in this sector work, including our own clientele, allowing for better understanding which also further improves our own company services that we provide to others.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arlingclose Limited to a friend?
Yes
Why?
For any of my friends who are interested in this sector, I would most definitely recommend this company. The branches of services that we touch on are vast, including tendering, consultancy and benchmarking. This company opts for a horizontal-team communication work approach, whereby there is no rigid hierarchy with work submission. The different teams all support each other in what they provide, to ensure the most optimal and tailored product to be delivered at the highest quality. For example, the consultancy team can discuss with the tender team to discuss the most suitable approach for a financial question from a client.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arlingclose Limited?
As advice, I would tell others to think about the logical approach you have to solving problems, be it a specific academic problem related to finance, or even an out-of-work problem relating to other situations. Additionally, demonstrating good teamwork and communication skills will be useful, given how this company thrives on these aspects to deliver our services. Finally, I will say is to be relaxed and be yourself. Even though this sounds cliche, the company looks for genuine connection, hoping to find an addition to the team that gels well together, even out of work. Don't be afraid to voice your opinions and ask for help. Arlingclose will always welcome any questions. and nurture your academic understandings too.
