Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am involved in the day to day functions of the HR Team. This includes arranging wellbeing initiatives and engagements, delivering training and advice to employees/managers, monitoring the recruitment process from advert to appointment and ensuring that employees receive the right medical support through Nexus' occupational health provider.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
My training programme has allowed me to develop in a professional and personal manner and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an apprentice at Nexus so far. I have covered a vast range of topics throughout the my level 3 apprenticeship and now the start of my level 5, which will help me a great deal in the workplace, when managing employee situations. I have received great support from my line manager, wider team and other departments which has helped me to grow in confidence.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have continued to develop my communication skills, whether this is verbal or written throughout my apprenticeship experience so far. I have been able to do this thanks to the increased responsibility that I have gained over time.
I have learnt how to write in an academic style through the support received from training providers and the time that Nexus have allowed me to do this. This is a key skill to continue developing into the future.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Since the start of my level 5 apprenticeship in April 2025, I have been contacted frequently by Access Training and kept up to date with documents I need to complete. I have recently attended my first session and found this very beneficial and I came away with a good knowledge of the course and what will be expected of me throughout.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive great support from my employer. I have frequent chats with my line manager and other colleagues within the HR team. Everybody is very supportive and are always happy to help when I am unsure of a certain aspect of HR. I am trusted to complete tasks and gradually over time my responsibilities have increased, which has helped me to develop.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have been kept in touch with frequently and the recent session I attended provided me with detailed knowledge with regards to assignments and the qualifications throughout the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I believe that the topics covered throughout the duration of this apprenticeship will enable me to grow as a people professional and support colleagues with all aspects of HR.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is plenty of wellbeing and engagement activities to get involved in at Nexus. For example, wellbeing walks are arranged. These may be local or transport is provided to the Lake District. I have participated in these walks before - they are really well organised and always a great day out.
Other activities may include 5-a-side football with colleagues, HIIT fitness sessions, Pension and Financial advice session. It is great that there is so much to participate in with colleagues.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Nexus to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Nexus is an excellent company to work for and they care about their people. There is always support there if needed and everybody is happy to share the knowledge on different disciplines in which they work. New starters are always welcomed into the organisation and there are plenty of projects to get involved in, at an exciting time for the organisation, with the introduction of the new fleet of trains.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nexus?
If there is a vacancy that somebody is in, I would certainly encourage them to apply for the position. Nexus is a great company to work for with plenty of employee benefits for those who already work for the organisation.
