Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Programme Delivery, SVQ Sports Coaching, Work Placements, Work residential.
The main role of the apprenticeship is to facilitate the delivery of life-skills and snowsports sessions aimed at changing the lives of the disadvantaged young people, using Skiing and Snowboarding as a platform to achieve this. Day to day tasks ranged from running icebreakers and wellbeing sessions, to supporting the instructor on the slope.
Alongside the programme element, you will also complete an SVQ in Sports Coaching, and carry out various work placements within the Snowsports industry. I worked with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], Glencoe Mountain Resort and had an extensive placement with Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK), all of which have the potential lead to further opportunities and future employment.
Throughout the apprenticeship Snow Camp also gave me the opportunity to travel to events and placements overseas. I spent a week with Snow Camp x WorkASeason in Val D’isere. Another week with Snow Camp x Summit Special in Les Gets, France. I also supported the main Snow Camp residential in Andorra, and spoke at the 3 Valley Rally, an event in Val Thorens, France.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Snow Camp for me has been a life changing experience, I very much feel like it gave me a platform to develop my confidence which in turn has given me the opportunity to live my life properly and overcome the burdening anxiety and lack of confidence that I had before the apprenticeship. I have loved every part, even the most tedious and mundane tasks are enjoyable in the environment which Snow Camp creates.
I have also gained a massive passion for snowboarding which has really kindled my ambitions and overall lifestyle.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
As well as massively improving my general confidence, Snow Camp also supported me to become a fully qualified BASI Snowboard Instructor, enabling me to work across the UK at Dry Slopes and Indoor Snow Centres, whilst also opening further pathways to work in the mountains at home and across the world.
I also completed my SVQ in Sports Coaching and was put through a Counselling qualification.
I learned many transferable skills overall.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship follows the structure of the Snow Camp programme, with the First Tracks sessions taking place over the Summer months, Graduate sessions taking place in the Autumn and Excel sessions following into the Winter and Spring months.
Between programmes is when you’ll complete your SVQ and go on work placements and residentials at home and abroad.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Snow Camp is a charity founded with the purpose of turning disadvantaged young lives around through snowsports, as such there are many opportunities for various different types of support.
Mental health support is available via the wellbeing manager at Snow Camp, including regular checkups throughout your apprenticeship. Snow Camp also put me through a MoneyWorks financial support course.
Snow Camp provides a massive amount of support whenever and however you may need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The work was pretty straightforward and anytime it was even relatively complicated, SDC Learn would set-up video calls and powerpoint presentations to make life easier and explain things in detail.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
As a Snowboard Instructor, the qualification in Sports Coaching has given me a variety of insights into making things safe and enjoyable for my learners, allowing me to keep control of large groups and provide them with high quality tuition. This has allowed me to build a healthy reputation working at various snowsports venues across Scotland.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Snow Camp has a Youth Forum, a collection of former Snow Camp graduates and Apprentices, who have completed the programmes and may wish to come back and volunteer their time supporting the next generation of young people.
The youth forum have regular activity meetings where they can get together and socialise and have a good time.

Yes
Why?
As I said previously, Snow Camp changed my life. I have gone on to work winter seasons in France and regularly go back to volunteer at the charity because of how much it has given me. Snow Camp was the best thing I ever done.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Snow Camp?
