Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role involves handling the safe movement of trains and passengers between set destinations. I prioritise safety, as well as time management in order to keep trains moving on top and keeping the delays down to a minimum for the best possible experience for those onboard. On top of carrying out customer service/ revenue checks whilst on duty.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being apart of the programme, I’ve had a lot of support throughout my journey and the tasks that have been expected of me, have felt more of an extra to aid me in carrying out my duties. I have worked a number of jobs before joining Southeastern and couldn’t recommend them enough as an employer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
My ability to spot risks and handle different situations has drastically improved. I’ve gained a Personal track safety license (which allows me to recognise different equipment on the tracks on top of they dangers they possess) and a license to operate trains independently (whether that be revenue checks, general customer service and dispatching a train).

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
From minute one, the plan of how the programme was gonna be implemented, the expectations on us and any support we might need. You never felt like you didn’t know what was ahead and any concerns were met with open arms and encouragement to clear any doubts I might have had.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
They have been very supportive from the beginning. Everyone who I’ve met have been really helpful, my manager has been really supportive and my apprentice coach has always been there when needed. This has allowed me to work at the most efficient I can, and gives me the opportunity to reflect on any feedback given and improve as a whole.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
They have been fully supportive, every bit of training I have received has been implemented to help ensure I am in a position to be able to achieve my qualification. And any extra support I’ve needed has always been offered to me, as well as doing little extras to help boost my skills.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It allows me to have a better understanding of my role as a whole. Rather than looking on the basic side of my job, I can see the full picture of how every single action I take works to improve services, whilst also representing the business on a wider scale.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is always something going on. At my depot at Faversham, we have an active social club that does a number of different events (whether just little meet ups, football, pantomime visits, etc). Outside of my depot there have been a number of other events that have been open to me.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Southeastern Railway to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They have been a great company to work for and be apart of. Everyone knows everyone and it’s like a big family. The job I do I thoroughly enjoy as I get to see a lot of sites, meet a lot of amazing people and even when things go wrong, I come away feeling accomplished that I’ve done the best I can. From the ground up they have a really supportive network where even the upper levels of management will check in with you and ask how you doing, which just makes you feel like you matter. They’ve been very supportive with any problems/concerns I’ve had and always work to help solve them.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Southeastern Railway?
Do it. It’s a difficult field to become apart of, as well as there being a lot of tests and expectations on us, but it’s all worth it. They look after their staff, there’s many different support networks and any problems never seem too difficult for them to solve. The job is great and the people you’ll meet and even better. It’s something I never even thought of before I joined, but now I’m here I can’t see why I’d ever want to leave. I’ve recommended Southeastern to a number of friends and family already and I can’t help recommend them enough.
