As a clinical trials apprentice, you support the planning, execution, and management of clinical trials. Daily tasks include preparing and maintaining study documentation, ensuring regulatory compliance, collecting and verifying data, and liaising with study sites and investigators. You assist with participant recruitment, coordinate visits, and ensure adherence to study protocols. You will also be monitoring trial progress, supporting quality control, and resolving issues are key responsibilities. Additionally, you participate in training to stay updated on clinical research processes and regulations. Maintaining accurate documentation and preparing reports are also essential parts of the role, contributing to the efficient and ethical conduct of clinical trials.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I am thoroughly enjoying my clinical trials apprenticeship. I love learning and developing new skills, and it's fulfilling to contribute to impactful research that can improve patient lives. Collaborating with experienced professionals and being part of a supportive team is incredibly rewarding and the variety of tasks keeps my work engaging, with valuable experience and training I receive are essential for my future career growth in clinical research.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
As a clinical trials apprentice, you gain new skills and develop existing ones. These include a deep understanding of regulatory requirements and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and improved data management skills, such as data collection, entry, verification, and cleaning. For me, my communication and organisational skills were significantly enhanced through liaising with study sites and managing documentation. I have also developed problem-solving abilities, technical proficiency with clinical trial management software, and sharpened attention to detail through meticulous documentation and quality control activities. Overall, my role has equipped me with a well-rounded skill set essential for efficient and ethical clinical trial management.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My clinical trials apprenticeship is well-organised and structured, following a 4 year rotational programme. The programme provides clear guidelines and protocols, ensuring compliance with university KSBs which includes comprehensive training sessions to build necessary skills and knowledge. Regular meetings and check-ins with supervisors and university mentors provide support and feedback, facilitating continuous improvement. The diverse range of tasks is systematically planned, allowing me to gain experience in various aspects of clinical trial management. Overall, the structured approach ensures a balanced workload and effective learning, contributing to my professional development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive support from my employer throughout my clinical trials apprenticeship. This includes comprehensive training sessions to build necessary skills and knowledge, as well as guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals. Weekly check-ins with mentors and supervisors provide valuable feedback and address any concerns. Additionally, I have access to essential tools, software, and resources needed to perform my tasks effectively. My employer also offers opportunities for continuous learning and professional development, ensuring I have the resources, guidance, and encouragement needed to succeed in my role and advance my career in clinical research.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive significant support from my training provider (university) while working towards my degree qualification. My module conveners and instructors offer clear explanations and academic guidance, while an abundance of study materials, online resources, and research databases aid my learning. Regular feedback on assignments and assessments helps me track my progress and improve. Additionally, SAS (steps to academic success) workshops, and in-person lectures in summer-schools enhance my understanding of clinical research. The university also provides access to academic advisors, counseling services, and peer support groups, ensuring I have the necessary support and encouragement. However, since it is long-distance learning, sometimes it is challenging to gain hands-on experience. Overall, this comprehensive support system is crucial for my success in achieving my qualifications.

4/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider significantly helps me perform better in my role. The structured coursework provides a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge, which is essential for understanding clinical research principles. Practical assignments in Clinical trials and hands-on projects help me apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing my skills in the workspace. The regular feedback and assessments ensure that I continuously improve and stay on track with my learning goals. The workshops and seminars offer deeper insights into industry practices and emerging trends. Overall, the comprehensive training equips me with the necessary skills and confidence to excel in my role.
