Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
words, legal obligations outlined in my contract. All those duties include assistance with
personal care such as bathing, toileting, or dressing. Administering the medications and ordering it to keep the stock for the future. As well as support with everyday life chores, for example cooking, shoppping or cleaning.
While performing all those tasks mentioned above, one of the important duties is to teach people I support practical skills to boost their independence and self-esteem.
As a support worker, I have a duty of care which is highlighted in different regulations I am
assigned to, so I have to always make sure I adhere to them to ensure all the activities are
performed with respect, dignity, and mutual agreement.
Also, I am responsible for the safety of the individual while under my care, so I have to make
sure all my actions are in line with health and safety regulations. I am obliged to complete the
manual and handling training in order to use medical equipment such as hoists or transfer boards. And attend other required training associated with my role.
Always familiarise myself with the risk assessment and the care plan of the individual before I
start my job.
Assisting with medical appointments and promoting healthy choices when it comes to diet and
general well-being. Also, I have to take any recommendations from the doctors, nurses, and
therapists to maintain the healthy lifestyle of the individual. I have to give a good example and
actively encourage them to participate in all their assigned activities from school or the day
centre to develop their creativity and socialising skills. As well as promote physical activity and
assist in choosing the best option for their physical health.
Paperwork is another task that I need to fulfil every day to make sure all the records are up to
date and all necessary checks are done in compliance with the regulations.
Except for all those duties mentioned above, I should offer emotional support for the people I
am looking after. This approach requires me to communicate effectively and listen actively, and
be present with an open attitude.
I ought to foster the family relationship by encouraging service users to keep in contact with
their parents, siblings, and other relatives.
Also, I need to speak behalf them if necessary, to protect their preferences and needs in public
services. To make sure their preferences and choices have been heard and addressed properly before they receive care or any type of medical treatment.
I have to remain confidential and not share personal information with other people unless I am
obliged by the law to do so.
It is necessary in my profession to show social skills and collaborate with other colleagues, and
follow the same rules in order to achieve the same goal, which is the best quality care. If the
situation requires, I have to train new workers and make sure they feel confident and competent before completing the assigned tasks.
I always offer support and reassurance to everybody around by showing competence, empathy, and understanding with every task.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
For sure, I have improved my calculation skills and reminded myself a lot of useful rules when it comes to maths. Also, I had an opportunity to upgrade my writing, listening and speaking skills as well by attending the workshops and participating with different activities with my personal tutor.
