Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Manning a station in the kitchen as well as occasionally creating specials and dishes for the staff menu. Cleaning, preparation for service. Labelling. Making food up to the standard of the company. We also held events which i helped plate and prepare food for.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Going to college weekly was nice to have a bit of variety in my life especially when we covered different topics each week. It helped me meet new people who i had a similar interest to. Furthermore i was able to cook foods that i would not normally have the chance to at college which was very fun

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Learning cooking of various food items, plating skills, tips and tricks to make my job easier as well as knife skills and various preparation techniques such as making pastry or cooking meats.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

There were different topics each week which meant the structuring was good for finding certain topics in my portfolio.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employes supported me lots with my pastry chef teaching me about things like deserts and pastries. And my head chef and sous chef showing me lots of techniques and helping me prepare certain specials and dishes for events
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My tutor was extremely knowledgeable and was incredible with his support, showing us the most optimal method for every task making even the hard ones easier. He also constantly came around the kitchen to help each student with mistakes and to understand why certain things happen in a certain way.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification helps me with creating a wider range of dishes and my creativity with them. As well as providing me with the skills required to do a large variety of kitchen tasks which i otherwise would struggle to do
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are lots of events such as fundraisers for charity, ranging from the annual beer festival to charity walks in Cornwall. Also events such as football matches with other competitors helps with networking with others in the industry.

Why?
There are a good amount of staff perks such as a 30% discount card and free drinks every Friday at the hicks bar. The pay is fairly good and the people are great.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to St Austell Brewery?
Always be ready to learn and have a good attitude as it will make both getting along with others and having fun in the work place a lot easier.
