Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role as Deputy Manager in a nursing home, I support the Home Manager in overseeing the day-to-day running of the home to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained. This involves supervising and supporting the care team, ensuring compliance with regulations and policies, coordinating staff rotas, and leading by example in delivering compassionate, person-centred care. I am actively involved in care planning, liaising with families, healthcare professionals, and external agencies, and addressing any concerns promptly. A big part of my role is also mentoring staff, promoting a positive and supportive environment, and helping drive continuous improvements to enhance residents' quality of life. Every day is a balance between operational management, team leadership, and hands-on care.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme as it challenges me and helps me grow professionally. My tutor is excellent — highly knowledgeable, supportive, and flexible with my learning needs. His encouragement and understanding make a big difference, allowing me to balance my studies with my role and feel confident in my progress.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, through studying for my NVQ Level 5 in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care, I have developed a much deeper understanding of management principles, safeguarding, quality assurance, and staff development. I’ve strengthened my leadership skills, becoming more confident in handling complex situations, supervising teams effectively, and promoting a high standard of care. It has also helped me improve my strategic thinking, decision-making, and ability to implement policies that ensure compliance and enhance the residents’ experience. Overall, it has really supported my growth into a more effective and reflective leader.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is very well-organised and structured, with clear guidance at each stage to help me progress confidently. The units are laid out logically, making it easy to follow and build on my knowledge. Support is always available when needed, which keeps everything on track and manageable alongside my work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive strong support from my manager who encourages my professional development and provides the time and flexibility needed for my studies. They are understanding of my learning commitments and are always willing to offer guidance, resources, and practical opportunities to apply what I’m learning in my role
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive excellent support from my training provider. My tutor is always approachable, flexible, and quick to respond to any questions I have. The feedback is clear and constructive, and I feel genuinely supported throughout my learning journey, which has helped me stay motivated and progress steadily toward my qualification
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that my qualification has made a real difference in how I perform in my role. It has deepened my understanding of leadership, care standards, and regulatory requirements, helping me approach situations more confidently and professionally. The practical knowledge and skills I’ve gained directly support my day-to-day responsibilities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are extra curricular activities available at my workplace, and I am proud to play an active part in them. As an Engagement Champion, I lead team building sessions designed to bring staff together, boost morale, and create a positive, supportive atmosphere. These sessions are a great opportunity for everyone to connect, relax, and strengthen working relationships outside of their usual duties. It’s really rewarding to see how these activities help build a stronger, happier team and improve our overall work environment.
