Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work in the shipping department at a Amazon Fulfillment Center. I use a hand scanner to scan the shipping label on a package, read the information displayed and then move that package to the correct location, place it into the container and then scan the stacking area (location) QR code to confirm the move. Once a container is full I use the hand scanner to close it by scanning eh stacking area, print labels which are placed on the container and then move that container to a staging area or directly onto a trailer if it has arrived and is on the dock. Then I replace and create a new container in the empty location ready to be filled again.
Sometimes I act as a shipping instructor training either new hires or cross training existing associates (AAs) in the shipping department using the training modules on umbrella. I train AA in dock safety, SLOT (Safe Loading of Trailers), pump truck, containers - OB Carts, Yorks and Shuttles, closing/creating containers, moving packages for a box chute to the right container. I also explain and show where the red tag area is for broken carts, equipment and pallets
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy the apprenticeship, it's been so nice to speak to/learn from other associates from other Amazon FC warehouses and delivery or sortation centers. The weekly sessions with my tutor and assignments have been interesting, sometimes challenging or thought provoking and useful as an associate and instructor. The knowledge and skills I have gained/developed from the course are useful for my future at home and at work and in any future job I go to.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have definitely improved in my communication skills, team work, understanding and ability of visual management systems and how to do dynamic risk assessments and how to problem solve - find root causes and develop solutions and plans.
I have used my knowledge/skills as a shipping instructor and working with others within the shipping department. I have also used my new knowledge to do a mini project to create a visual display for shipping to show which container should be created at chute locations. I am waiting for approval from my line manager to carry out my idea.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Quailitrain have been really organised and structured, very clear information and training plan provided. Weekly sessions with a tutor on MS Teams and guidance on how to use MS Teams and complete assignments and learner logs has been great.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
Initially not as much support and help at the start of the apprenticeship. Not a lot of understanding from managers/team leads about the apprenticeship especially for hours each week and training needed for the appreniceship. Once it was understood we could do a AEW training - 1 day training/shadowing for a department to gain an understanding of it instead of 40 hours of each department it got a lot easier to get training.
Apprenticeship laptops have been really hit and miss. Usually I end up wasting 10-45mins having to update and restart the laptop to get it to work and connect to the internet and then have to download chime and MS Teams before I can do any work. This is not convenient at all so I have to go to HR to get a laptop early so I can set up up to use. Sometimes the laptops still aren't working after updates, video/sound not working or not connecting to the internet which means I waste time having to change laptops.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Qualitrain has been excellent in providing support on how to download and use MS Teams, how to do assignments and submit them and do learner logs and OTJs. The training material for each session provided is always of excellent quality and helpful to complete assignments. The coaching sessions every other week have been useful as well to give support/someone to ask when I need help or to check my understanding of something.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I think this apprenticeship has been beneficial to preform better in my role. When I first started the apprenticeship I was doing a step up as a trainer in the learning and development department and this really helped me with my effective communication and teamwork. I also apply what I have learnt in my role as a shipping instructor. I am more aware of health and safety, the environment and safety assessments and the importance of good handovers, 5S and audits.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are wide variety of activities and events at EMA1 for different holidays, festivals and religions, we have music displays, cultural food from different countries, bingo, quiz's, crosswords, dress up days for differnet things such as Christmas, Earth Day, mental health etc. We also have the opportunity to volunteer for different things as well throughout the year. We have a post peak party and a summer event as well. Last year our summer event was to go to Twycross Zoo and we could take a family member as well.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Amazon to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Every job no matter where or what it is has good points and bad points. I feel like the good things at Amazon outweigh any negative as the benefits are great (weekly pay, medical, dental, flexi, shift swap) and the chance to progress within the company is high. The opportunity to further your education either through career choice or an apprenticeship is fantastic. If you want to grow and progress you can if you are willing to work at it. Amazon = Opportunity
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amazon?
I would recommend for those who don't have English or Maths GCSE to still opt in to do the functional skills as this will help you to apply and gain a tier 3 or higher role. Stay on top of your OTJ hours, don't fail behind on them and log them properly. Get started on your learner logs as soon as you can and keep multiple copies. Make sure you update the learner logs on your one drive so you can always access them regardless of which laptop you are using. Definitely apply for the adventure week away it's an amazing experience.
