Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
We rotate between 3 placements throughout the 2.5 years. All placement are HR based and include supporting the team with whatever work/ projects they have on at the time.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I've enjoyed my programme, I've always worked with great people, the learning is manageable with the right support and there's lots of variety and opportunity available since it's such a large organisation. The only challenge I've faced is not being given enough work to do/ used as admin support rather than to get involved in stretching tasks.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I've developed professional skills such as stakeholder management, collaboration, data presenting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The variety of rotations is great as it gives you greater insight into the different areas of HR. The degree itself is almost always relevant to the roles and therefore fairly easy to evidence your in-placement learning. The organisation of the rotations could be managed better by being tailored to our specific learning needs/ career goals but overall, the organisation is pretty good.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I've always received any support needed and been met with understanding when I've been through personal issues or struggled with any learning barriers.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The provider is great with giving support, even with discussing challenges with the placement. We always have regular 1-1s scheduled and before any assignment, we have drop-in sessions to discuss any questions or worries around the topic. I couldn't really faulty them, the only extra thing that would be helpful is more support generically on essay writing.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
9 times out of 10 the topics relate well to my placement, the only challenge at the beginning was my lack of seniority. Since it is a management degree and I don't manage a team, I had to fabricate a lot of my evidencing as I simply didn't have enough experience yet. I think it would work better if you didn't start evidencing until the 6 month mark.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of opportunities for events internally for example, talent events, employee resource group days, national celebration events such as international women's day etc. I've also become part of the AAN externally and my employer is always supportive of me attending those events as long as my work is up to scratch which is great for keeping it interesting.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Royal Mail Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There's lots of opportunity within the business, you could have a complete career change but still be with the same company. The business are very supportive of learning and development and are very encouraging for you to flourish within the business (I think this depends on who you're managed by but I've mostly had positive experiences so far). The work life balance is good, I work from home most days, travelling into London, Sheffield or the Midlands once every couple of weeks. However, there is also the option to work from an office more frequently if that suits you.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Royal Mail Group?
Be confident in you're abilities and demonstrate this in your interview, you have just as much of a shot as anybody else. Research the company prior to your interview to understand their values and work so you can demonstrate yourself as the right kind of candidate to hire. Once in the role, just advocate for yourself and say yes to any opportunity that comes your way.
