Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My degree apprenticeship was titled as a process engineering, however in my first year I have been more focused on asset planning and maintenance, which I am really enjoying. This involves a lot of data analysis (excel/powerBI) and planning next steps to improve performance of our assets.
I have had a handful of site visits, however the role I am in currently rarely involves the need to go to site so these have been more induction tours. In the next few years I will look to get more involved on site.
Overall, I am really enjoying my apprenticeship and I can already see many opportunities that I am interested in for the next few years of my apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have really enjoyed it so far and feel that I have been exposed to the right amount of challenges. I can see lots of opportunities I would like to get involved in in the future.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
- data analysis skills
- communication skills through many different medias
- understanding of how projects are managed

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
In terms of my time at University, I go to uni in week blocks. For the first year we have had around 8 weeks at Uni (which reduces in second year, and for third and forth year Uni is just online). This has been well structured.
It did take a while initially to get enough work to be built up for me to be satisfied with the amount of challenge I was getting. However, by 3 months this had changed, and I was getting a good amount of work.
I haven’t yet experienced a role switch and I’m not sure if Severn Trent plan to do this. Currently, I am happy in my role but I may look to get involved with other teams at some point to increase the experience I get.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive lots of support when needed and it is easy to get it whenever it is necessary. I also receive lots of support from my line manager.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have tripartite reviews with the training provider, my line manager and I. These help to solve any issues I may have. The training provider is also easy to contact in the meantime between reviews. It is also easy to contact Uni lecturers when needed for help specific to uni work, and they tend to reply swiftly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Currently as my role hasn’t been directly related to process engineering, the knowledge I have gained from uni hasn’t been directly represented in the work at my workplace, however the key engineering principles still apply.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are some events to get involved in, for instance we have a new talent meeting every month which includes just people on apprenticeships and graduate schemes. Here we can discuss how we improve the experience that apprentices and grads have within Severn Trent.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It has been a great experience for me so far and the company offers lots of benefits aswell as the role itself (including excellent pension, and sharesave scheme). I couldn’t have asked for more support than I receive aswell which is very good as an apprentice. I am very happy I chose Severn Trent.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
I would 100% consider applying to Severn Trent if you want an apprenticeship that gives you the support when needed, great benefits, job security, and a great environment to work in.
