Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
On a day-to-day basis, I work on a number of our Cyber tools to better improve their security efficacy, while also engaging with Cyber/Technology teams to work together to ensure we, as a Cyber function, are able to streamline the process of keeping the rest of Severn Trent to be cyber compliant, while minimising business impact and maximising user experience, where possible.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
For the most part, I enjoy my programme - my college work is often quite interesting, however some aspects of my work can be tedious - in part, due to my lack of knowledge/experience of Severn Trent processes, etc. Despite the challenges my job poses, I still enjoy helping to contribute to the ever-improving cyber posture of Severn Trent.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
At college, my modules are rather varied, so give me a good breadth of knowledge, which more often than not has complemented my work in the Cyber function. In addition, my work within Cyber has allowed me to learn more about how teams work together to accomplish tasks in a large organisation, while also learning how to use some of our Cyber tools.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
In terms of the Severn Trent side of my apprenticeship, my programme is rather well-structured, and I am on rotations in teams which most closely align with my current uni module. In terms of the college side of my apprenticeship, Gloucestershire College have a well-structured programme, however it can be poorly-organised at times.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My manager is incredibly supportive, encouraging me to gain experience across a range of roles in Cyber, while also encouraging my personal development. In terms of the wider organisation, we also have the Severn Trent Academy, who are helpful in supporting such personal/professional development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have an Assessor and a Training Coordinator, who help ensure that I am on track in terms of my OTJ hours and supporting my competency evidencing. In addition, I feel that if I am struggling in a module, I can ask for help from any combination of the Trainer, Assessor, or Training Coordinator who will do their utmost to ensure I am supported as best as possible.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
As mentioned previously, I feel my college modules complement what I do at work, and help form the initial foundational knowledge/skills to allow me to build on this further within my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Every employee is entitled to 2 volunteering days per year, and in Cyber, we have a Socials Chair who helps run a varied calendar of socials for the function.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Severn Trent are a very supportive organisation to work for, with a very friendly culture and plenty of very experienced people who will give their time to support you.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
Be confident, be yourself, have experiences you can talk about, and arguably the most important, know the company values. If you receive an offer, congrats - having the right attitude to working, and doing the best you can to learn as much as possible, particularly in the first weeks/months, will help stand you in good stead.
