Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am doing a project management degree apprenticeship. Day to day I work on multiple project within my team which is in the retail industry, Because I am a new apprentice (7 months) I have yet to have my own projects. So far I am playing a heavy supportive role in my managers projects. I will usually have an itenary of tasks to complete from my manager and any spare time is used to work on my assignments and university tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
At first I really enjoyed the programme because I was new and it was all very exciting to me. Since then my satisfaction has definitely dropped but not by a significant extent or to the extent of me wanting to quit. There is definitely areas to improve on, but I can understand this because of how new this programme is. The most enjoyable part is working with the team and doing the corporate side of the apprenticeship and the least enjoyable is the university side.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have definitely developed my communication skills as it is necessary in my role to reach out and collaborate with people from many different areas of the business. As a result of this I also have developed my teamwork qualities. I have improved on working with others to complete a common goal.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
The structure of the programme is an area that can be improved significantly. I have one study day a week and it is on a Friday where I only do uni work and webinars. However, this is something that many people are not aware of in the corporate side which means often times I am working on my uni days more than doing uni work. I know if I raise this issue they will just say "send out a notification saying you have uni and don't respond to messages" but it is not that simple when you have a senior member in your team coming to you and asking you to do something, Also after making us come into the office 5 days a week and not being able to get an exception to do my uni day from home, it has gotten worse because people just come up to your desk and ask for things because they see you in the office and think your doing work (rightly so) and you can't just ignore them. The lecture schedule is even worse and I think it HAS to change. Lecturers from the training provider come in 2 days every month and give us 8 hour lectures back to back! It is not possible for anyone to sit for 8 hours with minimal breaks and properly learn and absorb the information. By the second day you are finished and nothing goes into your brain. This definitely needs to change to improve lectures and structure.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Employer provides a lot of development opportunities through events and talks which is good as an apprentice to attend. There is a lot of benefits you can enroll to outside of work so support is good in that aspect. There is a great HR service which you can go to whenever needed as well.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
There is a good support network from the university side. Lots of 1 on 1's available if you are ever stuck and want tailored help. They are always within an emails reach and are always up to help the apprentices. They are very responsive to feedback too and implement any suggestions. They also provide a lot of resources for the apprentice to help with assignments and uni work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The things I learn for my qualification to directly help in my role. There has not been one area of my uni work where it has been irrelevant to my role so far. This is really good because I have noticed myself develop better in my role as I go further into my qualification.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There is a lot of events that you can just enroll into and go to which is good. There is a lot of extra-curricular opportunities but it is down to yourself to find these through channels and other resources. Your team has a heavy impact on how many socials, events and offsite you do. If your team put heavy importance on the social aspect of work, then expect yourself to have loads of events within your team. In my experience, my team don't care too much about the social side and don't have many team events so I don't get to go to many, whereas I know people in my cohort who are in another team and they go to team dinners and social frequently. Also with my team apprentices are excluded from going to offsite, so we have pretty much no opportunity to travel with work. But there are other teams which allow apprentices to travel and they get to go traveling with the team. So to conclude, it is super dependent on your team and in my case my team don't really seem to care about the social side so for me there is not much to do extra-curricular wise.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Amazon to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because there is a lot of development opportunities. There is a lot of flaws but as I said it is a new programme and will continue to develop. I truly believe working at Amazon will open the most doors for your career after your apprenticeship because of how big and diverse the company is. It is the best place to learn and develop due to the culture. Also it pays the apprentice an actual living wage which a lot of other training providers can learn from.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Amazon?
Do your research on the leadership principles as they are super important within Amazon. Make sure to be authentic as well and show that you are someone who is good at communicating and working with others.
