Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I help to manage any projects and productions my team are working on in the BBC's Children's & Education department. This includes raising bookings, payments and contracts; aiding with logistics including booking travel and accommodation; raising and completing paperwork; and, learning to manage budgets and a production from pre to post.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
I enjoy aspects of the programme and the opportunities the BBC provides, however I don't feel that I am given much responsibility or enough training for me to really grow and progress. I feel that I am just filling staffing gaps where other people in the department have been made redundant.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have learnt about the media industry as a whole, as well as how to use a number of BBC systems and how to manage a team of BBC staff going into schools to provide assemblies and workshops, including the documentation and procedures needed to enable this to happen safely and effectively.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It's good that we move teams every 6 months as this allows us to experience a number of elements of Production Management and widen our network within the organisation. I enjoy my study sessions which happen once a month online. However, I would prefer some more in-person training/study.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The BBC is generally very good in terms of supporting current staff in terms of the opportunities available and the wellbeing support that is on offer. I have been experiencing a number of issues in my personal life and the BBC and my managers have been very accommodating of this.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Our training provider is good in terms of the support offered. Our tutor is always available to contact via email and we are often asked for our feedback and have regular progress check ins. We also had to complete a number of courses in order to understand the wellbeing and safety procedures of the training provider.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It has enabled me to understand more about the BBC and the media industry in general. There is a fair amount of course content that I have yet to come across in my role, and some that I may not come across considering the department I am in is largely digital and not TV-based.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I am currently the Apprentice Community Newsletter Co-Editor which is something I applied for as I was missing a sense of creativity in the work I was doing day-to-day. This allows me to research and write more which is something I particularly enjoy, as well as network with other apprentices.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Generally as an organisation, I would recommend it to a friend, however I would say that in terms of getting a job at the BBC, this is not something guaranteed long term as most contracts are fixed term or offered on a freelance basis which makes it difficult for anyone wanting some stability.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
The apprenticeships are best for those who are younger and just starting out in their career. For someone who is a career-changer and has taken a pay cut for this opportunity, I'm concerned that I will not progress as much as I should be and won't be utilising my skills and experience as much as I could be due to the 'apprentice' tag.
