Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My day-to-day duties vary. I can be in the office creating an annual program for resurfacing using survey data and mapping software one day, and another be out on site measuring a scheme and creating solutions to existing issues on the highway network.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the variety of my work and find my colleagues enjoyable to work with. I get satisfaction from seeing jobs through from start to finish and take pride in the impact we have on our local communities.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt how to use QGIS (mapping software) and developed my skills on Microsoft excel. I have learnt about the different materials used in resurfacing and different techniques to improve the longevity of our roads. Moreover I have learnt how to build a resurfacing scheme and use a measure book effectively.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The structure of my program is dependent on what tasks are on going and upcoming. Certain tasks are typically completed at certain times of the year which influences my tasks.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer is very supportive of my studies and grants me revision time during work hours to ensure I can be dedicated to my studies. My colleagues always willingly answer any questions and are constantly providing me with new information and experience to help me shape my career.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
I am disappointed with the quality of education from my learning provider. I receive little feedback from the tutor, and when I ask for feedback, the response is 'I emailed you the answers didn't I?' The tutor seems unorganized and unaware of requirements for the course which does not motivate me to take my learning seriously.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
My education is loosely linked to my role, but it gives me a wider understanding of construction principles and is crucial to broadening my knowledge. It further helps me to maintain and develop my English and math skills which is important for continual development.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Balfour Beatty run an early careers program which is great for building connections within the industry and personal development. The program includes a residential to the lake district where there are a variety of activates to push yourself and learn to work in a team. Moreover the early careers program hosts a variety of social events to help connect people.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Balfour Beatty has welcomed me from my first day and provided me with all the tools I need to complete my apprenticeship to the best of my ability. They have been accommodating to college and early careers requirements and promote a healthy work environment and culture.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Just go for it. I applied with next to no experience in the field I am now working in but because I proved I have a good work ethic and willingness to learn I was offered the role. You don't need to have all the knowledge or experience to apply for an apprenticeship because it is all about learning and development. Work hard and be open to new experiences and you will see the rewards.
