Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My job role involves assisting and managing the financial aspects of MEICA projects and contracts within the water industry. I work closely with our project planners and project managers to make sure works are delivered on time, adhere to contractual terms and remain in budget; whilst also, carrying out value for money checks to try to increase profit margin. Additionally, I am involved with invoicing, preparing and issuing applications for payment; assisting with managing and mitigating risk; liaising with suppliers, contractors and clients to sustain efficient supply chain management; and advise on or resolve any claims or disputes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme modules are relevant, informative and engaging, and the teaching staff are supportive and always willing to help or assist with any questions or additional support I may need. They provide real-life industry experience and can provide advice on work or education based questions and situations.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Currently, all my knowledge that I have about MEICA works, the water industry, quantity surveying and what my company do, I have learned through my colleagues and working in the industry - with some knowledge and skills being learned through academic courses. I have, also, been able to develop my interpersonal skills, improved upon my self-confidence, learned to work with contracts, and continue to learn and improve upon my industry-specific technical knowledge.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My Programme is well-structured with one day in person at university and the other days working in the office. The timelines for modules and assessment or assignment deadlines work really well. It can require a lot of work and time management in order to both work and attend education at the same time but it has been manageable so far.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My company and colleagues are really supportive of me and my career development. From past experience in a poorly managed education institution, the senior management staff, my line manager and my colleagues dealt with the situation really well and were all really supportive during that period of time. They provided advice which allowed me to continue on to join my degree apprenticeship course. The colleagues in my department and others are always open to helping me improve in any way they can.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
To go into my degree apprenticeship course after poor past experiences, it was almost a completely different academic environment. The staff are supportive and always willing to help or assist with any questions or additional support I may need. The institution, which delivers my course, provides assistance to all students and for those who require physical, mental or spiritual support, they can provide that too.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The industry I work in differs from the industry most/all quantity surveying courses are based on. My course is primarily based around the construction industry, whereas I work in the water industry for a MEICA company. Despite this difference, the qualification has lots of transferrable aspects. It allows me to learn new things, gain wider knowledge across another industry, and allow me to improve upon aspects that I do in my day to day job role. I think it has been beneficial for me to undertake this course so I can learn how the wider infrastructure industry works and also improve upon things I use day to day and will use more often as I develop further.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I try to participate in most work extra-curricular activities, for example: a popular event organised in the office I am based in, is a night playing skittles. I have also volunteered to take part in multiple charity events held by other companies that my employer has been invited to; in the past, these have ranged from an orienteering style team race to a black tie dinner and auction to a team water raft building and racing event on the River Thames.
Additionally, a couple years ago, I organised a hike up Pen Y Fan, in South Wales; where myself, a few colleagues and their family members kindly volunteered to participate and help raise money for Cancer research UK - this was a great success!
