Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an apprentice, primarily I support my wider team. This means acting as a project manager, so day-to-day I come into the office, check my emails and make notes on progress across projects, host and attend meetings, do the first review/draft of documents and liaise with colleagues, clients and any other necessary people to obtain information needed to move forward on a project.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I think this is best route in to law, I enjoy my team and am treated with respect and the awareness that I am just starting out. Personally, I have been very lucky and do genuinely enjoy my job.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have developed my commercial awareness and communication skills massively. The experience of being in the working environment from an earlier age sets you up well. I have learnt practical legal knowledge and applied it before studying the corresponding modules in University and at the least have become comfortable working in this environment before people my age have had a chance to try it.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The degree into SQE course/training contract is set out in an organised and structured way, I know that I will be in my team for 4 years and then move into my TC and onto my SQE prep. In terms of the teams, I think it is hard to set out a framework of what is expected of you as you go up in our 4 year seat. Again, I feel my team is good a pushing me without overwhelming me so that I gain the experience I need.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I cannot fault my team, I always have a study day and feel support to discuss any queries with anyone. It is team dependant.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have a call with a Skills Coach every 10-12 weeks to discuss progress, goals and wellbeing. My skills coach is easily contactable as are the teaching/support staff at my university. I feel I get enough support to succeed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think the degree provides context to my day-today job and puts you in the right mind set to approach problems from a legal perspective, but there are limited modules that are relevant to my work (this is good as you need to study the core modules for the degree and its interesting to learn something else).
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
As an apprentice there are social events specifically for you at other firms where you can meet people your age and at the same stage of the apprenticeship. There are team events and socials which are always fun. My firm have sports teams and clubs, I have not joined any yet.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Ashurst to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have enjoyed my experience so far, the work ranges and is all interesting. Practically, the reputation and client base at Ashurst means you can work with some big clients from a very early stage, the office is very nice and the people are lovely.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Ashurst?
Be yourself, applying through the apprenticeship route means than the expectation of practical, commercial and legal knowledge is not high instead the firm are looking interest and potential. Also, any work experience is valid and an assets to demonstrate your skills it does not have to legal.
