Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a production apprentice in children's and education and throughout my 18 months I get to move around different departments within children's and education to try a bit of everything.
My first placement was in the BBC Bitesize Schools tour team which is an outreach programme which involves a panel and a presenter traveling to school across the UK to discuss careers. I was a researcher and was responsible for finding schools to visit and finding panelist to talk to the students in the schools. I then had to do background checks on the panelist we chose. I went on tour to Kent for a week to see what my work in the office was contributing too and It was really eye opening and I had the best week. I closely shadowed the assistant producer as well as supporting the AV team.
My second placement was in the careers team. I tried a bit of everything in this department. I wrote articles for the Bitesize website, I edited videos and photoshopped Images and posters for both the website and social media and I even did a bit of presenting for some of the videos.
My third placement was on Other Side of the Story. during my time here I wrote more articles, did more editing and made quizzes about fake news for the website.
My current placement is with the YouTube and Social team and I love it. I get to come up with ideas for content on Instagram and TikTok as well as lots of editing.
The BBC has also given me many opportunities outside of children's and education through shadowing. I have shadowed at BBC Radio Manchester, which inspired me so much that I now volunteer at a local radio station where I present and produce my own show every Tuesday. I have shadowed in BBC sport and in the Cebeebies house/CBBC HQ where i got to shadow the Director for the live 15 year anniversary of Hacker and Dodge.
I have also had the opportunity to work as a talent runner for Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton from morning live at Comic Relief 2025.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love my apprenticeship and feel like I have endless opportunities and support. Every member of staff at the BBC and my peers are so supportive and willing to help you succeed and have access to as many experiences and opportunities as possible.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have been able to develop my editing skills further. I had a base knowledge from my college course (UAL Level 3 extended diploma in TV, film, broadcast and content creation) but through editing day to day I have realy improved my knowledge and ability to edit. I have really develoed my skills using Photoshop as I didnt use photoshop in college as much as premier pro.
I have also learnt how to write like a journalist rather than writing how we were taught in our GCSEs.
throughout my apprenticeship I have also built up my confidence and networking abilities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is well structured with regular rotations around the larger department. we have monthly catch up calls with our scheme supervisors and they are easy to contact and talk to at any time. We also have weekly check-ins with our line managers. We also have an apprentice community where we have regular socials and meetings to support each other.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I can contact any of my colleagues at anytime and I know there is support available. I had a bit of a rocky start as I have ADHD and dyslexia and didn't believe in myself and my capabilities but I had so much support from my scheme supervisor and line managers and they got my all of the support I needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Bauer are really helpfull and like the BBC I can contact them for support at anytime. I have fortnightly meeting with learning support and we have 1 to 1 sessions with our corse lead regularly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It teaches us the skills we need to successfully complete our day to day roles and not worry that we can't do a task we have been asked to do.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
As part of the apprentice community and our departments we have regular socials and I have made lots of friends both in. my teams and in other apprentices. I walk around the office now and bump in to so many people that I know and it's just a friendly environment to be in. There is also a BBC Club where many activities are available like a football, running, yoga and boxing club.
