Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work on the railway in civils. I am responsible for cost management, forecasting, adjustment events, subcontract/client liaison, and control across a package of circa £25m projects in the North west and Central region of the CRSA (Alliance between NR, Atkins, TSO and BB)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
The programme is insightful and very interesting i find that northumbria has some content disconnect due to the bredth of quantity surveying across industries, however they do work hard to try and resolve issues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
The apprenticeship, along with working experience, works in tandem to provide a wealth of skills while also developing existing ones. It's a high-speed environment that can sometimes be difficult to work with line managers to grow the skills but the growth is still there.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
It can be quite disorganised and difficult to follow on the university end. Fortunately there is a good setup of Balfour Beatties side with the academy etc to try and support with this.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Substantial support is on offer ranging from courses in my SBU to global academy learning down to line manager one to ones and support with the course and working.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Significant amounts when time permits. I'm on day release which breaks the workload up however, there is some difficulty in time pressing periods when the work load becomes significant.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I feel it matches with traditional quantity surveying however, with the modernisation of systems & frameworks it has became less applicable.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
BB provides an array of social activities such as team building, challenges, social events and professional networking with a host of opporutnities to travel across the country.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel its a great start of a career with plenty of career development. you are pushed to excel within and even external to the company and carry the brand as a respectable household name in construction
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Be confident, in your interviews and application. They generally want the best out of you and although you may feel nervous they do alot to try and calm you down to show your potential. It will be a naturally good fit if you are enthusiastic about construction and the role of choice.
