Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I will daily be given tasks that correlate to what is happening with the commercial calendar for that week. One week I will be receiving and reviewing applications from the subcontractors. The next week submitting our application to our client and dealing with any queries/ substantiation needed. The next week forecasting/ making our CVR for internal reasons and typically the final week assessing change management. As well as many other tasks throughout the week, such as going on site and gaining understanding of what happens
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the programme I am on greatly. I have received lots of support from not only my manager, but everyone on site. Including client teams, subcontractors. I have Friday's off of work to do my university bits. The course is laid out really well, it is all online apart from once a semester going to Northumbria university along with my cohort who are enrolled on the same course. Creating friends and having different experiences makes this great

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills, such as:
Professional communication with all parties involved on site
Financial knowledge, payment runs, how to assess applications
Knowledge of how construction works, hierarchy of control and how to go about constructing projects
How important it is to leave a paper trail in all situations

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is really well organised, I know what to do every Friday when I am at university. As well as Balfour's offering great early careers support as well as opportunities to connect with other early careers. We have bi monthly catch up meetings in cohorts of about 10 people and compete tasks together
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive lots of support, not once has me doing university on a Friday been an issue with anyone. All trips to Northumbria university are 2 days of being there and again has never been an issue. All early careers have lots of support and guidance from the early careers team
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive lots of support from my training provider, weekly lectures and assignments from the university. We have to complete OTJL (Off The Job Learning) weekly to evidence our work throughout the university days as well as any CPD we can complete. At work, I receive guidance on my assignments, often the General Works Manger reads through my assignments before I send them off
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification does help with my work. It helps to give me a theoretical idea for things such as procurement, construction technology and health and safety that I can implement into my activities at work. I feel as if this benefits me, however I personally am much more of a hands on learner
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
With Balfour Beatty, they have a great early careers system set up. We go to the lake district once a year for four days to partake in a variety of activities, with lots of teambuilding. Once you join Balfour's you will be invited for an early careers get together with all of the other early careers intake. You get to meet so many people, even some directors of the business

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Balfour's is a great place to work, they have a great system for early careers of all types, such as graduates, apprentices. Lots of support whenever needed, as well as great colleagues that you see on a day to day basis. It is also interesting seeing projects come from nothing and be built up in a process
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
In interviews, be confident, research what you can about what you want to go into. Make an effective CV that helps you to stand out, no more than 2 pages. Make conversation in interviews, expand on your points and just simply try to be as likeable and genuine as possible
