Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a materials management trainee at Ibstock PLC, my work focuses on the management of kilns and dryers, involving a mix of hands-on technical activities, analytical problem solving, and management tasks. On a day-to-day basis I am involved with the testing of materials, solving manufacturing issues, and management responsibilities. Over the course of the four years, we aim to complete a series of technical modules to develop our understanding of the factory processes, management systems, and project management.
During my first year, I have had the opportunity to take the lead in projects that will have an impact on the manufacturing process, and engage in projects designed to encourage students to think about apprenticeships and careers in STEM / manufacturing.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme, especially the balance it offers between practical work and academic learning. University provides me with a chance to explore theoretical concepts in depth, and broadens my knowledge in ways that complement my work, even though they don't always overlap directly.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout my time so far at Ibstock, I have been able to learn and develop a range of technical, analytical, and management skills. Technically, I have gained experience in materials testing, and troubleshooting manufacturing issues with tunnel kilns and dryers. I've also improved my ability to analyse data, ensure quality, and make sense of production metrics to find ways to improve. On the management side, I've gained experiences with project management, attending meetings, improving my communication skills and confidence, and managing my time effectively when balancing multiple tasks.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The structure of my programme is generally well organised, with a clear rhythm between university and work. I spend one week at university every three weeks, which allows me to focus on my studies and spend a lot of time in the workplace. Balancing university and work can sometimes be a challenge, as the academic workload can be heavy at times- however, Ibstock are really supportive in allowing us the time to prioritise our assignments.
While the programme offers valuable hands-on experience at work in many areas of the business, the way apprentices experience different departments is not always standardised. Some apprentices get more exposure to certain areas than others, which can make it a bit tricky to compare experiences or measure progress. However, I appreciate the flexibility and opportunity to learn in different areas, and find the programme rally rewarding and challenging.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer, which has been really important for me and my development so far. Being a female in a male-dominated industry has been a daunting experience however, the team at Ibstock are supportive and approachable, ensuring I have enough guidance and assistance at work. I receive regular check-ins to ensure I'm on track and discuss ant concerns or areas for improvement.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my training provider, especially through regular check-ins with my academic coach, which give me the opportunity to discuss my progress, ask questions, and provide feedback on the course structure. The lecturers are always willing to provide extra support with assignments and questions.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
While a lot of the academic focus in the first year has been on metals, whereas my role primarily involves working with ceramics, I've still been able to apply my knowledge to ceramic manufacturing processes like extruding and sintering. I have gained a solid understanding of the use of excel through the mathematics/ mechanics modules which has been really beneficial in industry.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are several extra curricular activities to get involved in, such as becoming a STEM ambassador or an Apprenticeship Ambassador, representing the programme. Additionally, joining the Construction Inclusion Coalition has allowed be to contribute to diversity and inclusion efforts in the industry. We also have many fitness, and creative activities organised across the business to get involved with.
