Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a banking supervisor, my role involves the supervision of a portfolio of banks to maintain the safety and soundness of these firms. On a day to day, this can include anything from risk assessments on various financial resources and management to regular meetings with the firm's management to consider the viability of their strategy.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme a lot! Working at The Bank of England, I am exposed to the daily movements of markets, get to meet a range of interesting individuals to learn from and am given responsibilty early in my career. My degree is relevant to my work and I enjoy learning content that is utilised in my day to day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

My knowledge of the financial services industry and the operations of banks has increased through supervision of these firms. My understanding of the concepts behind capital, liquidity and credit has also developed. More broadly, I have also improved my time management, prioritisation and team work skills through projects and responsibility.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is well structured with good lecturers, timely exams and a manageable workload. I am aware of any upcoming deadlines well in advance which allows me to plan my university work efficiently and not get in the way of my job.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My line manager is incredibly supportive and aware that I am managing a degree alongside my work. As a result, my workload is adjusted appropriately and I am given extra time around my exams to revise if I need it. I have frequent well being check ins with my apprenticeship leader.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The university is good and receptive to any questions we have about upcming exams or assignments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My applied finance degree is very relevant to my day to day work. I am frequently finding myself understanding more technical pieces of work as a result of information picked up during my degree.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes we have lots of sports teams from football to cricket. We also have other activities such as go karting and visiting the theatre. There is lots of networks to get involved with!

The Bank has a very supportive nature and allows you to learn whilst gaining real time work experience. Being the central bank, it is directly linked into many facets of the financial services industry providing good exposure early in your career.
