Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am currently in our internal finance team and have been for 18 months. I supervise 3 trainees with simpler tasks surrounding accounts payable and simple accounting tasks. I also complete lots of reconciliations, journals, capital additions, prepayments and reporting on data provided to the public.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I would say i largely enjoy the programme and find the NAO a pleasant place to work with lots of friendly and supportive colleagues. L&D provide a particularly helpful onboarding programme and audit training. There could be more support for finance apprentices and with apprenticeship paperwork and requirements.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have significantly improved my excel skills and have been provided both formal and desk training on this. being my first professional role i have developed skills of working in such an environment. My accounting knowledge has also greatly improved over the last 18 months.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
We have a training provider for college which i find provide adequate resources and teaching. There is clear career progression available and opportunities to take on increased responsibilities and manage people while a trainee.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
Generally good support from colleagues and management. Exam policy needs to be more clear and fair with HR providing more support and empathy. This would improve exam pass rates and job security for trainees.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Bang average. Tuition is okay but no real support outside classroom hours.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Good improvement in technicle knowledge however alot of this does not effect my current role day to day.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
We have lots of support networks such as religious, for carers and most recently an apprentice network to provide networking and support to apprentices. There are also lots of sports such as football, netball, tennis and running. Social activities are limited but with bigger apprentice intakes this is improving.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Audit Office to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Generally a place i have enjoyed working, the people are great. The pay and benefits as an apprentice are good as well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Audit Office?
Ensure you understand the work and impact of the NAO. Be confident and sure of your soft and hard skills, values and ethics.
