Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As an apprentice paralegal in the corporate team, I get to work on a wide variety of tasks. Most of my time is spent helping lawyers with big transactions, mergers, and corporate restructures. This could mean drafting documents, assisting with completion procedures, or handling admin tasks. Every day brings something different, which keeps the work interesting and varied.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I’ve really enjoyed the programme so far, and the highlight has definitely been the people. Working with such a diverse group and meeting new faces every day has been an invaluable experience. Whether it’s clients, lawyers, or business operations employees, interacting with a variety of individuals has made the programme so much more enjoyable. It’s also helped to make the induction and onboarding process a lot smoother and more welcoming.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Every day I’m able to learn something new and develop my skills. Whether it’s improving my writing by reading emails from senior colleagues or sharpening my time management by handling tight deadlines, there’s always room to grow. I’ve also picked up new skills like problem-solving, by figuring out the best way to approach tasks under pressure, and teamwork, through collaborating effectively with colleagues from different departments.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme has been incredibly well organised so far, and the support we’ve received has been outstanding. Right from the first month, we were given a clear overview of how the two years would be structured, including how our study days would fit alongside our working days. We always get clear guidance on upcoming assessments and academic deadlines, which makes it much easier to stay on track.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a great deal of support from my employer, which makes balancing work and studies much easier. They are always flexible about which days I can use as my study day, ensuring that it fits around my academic commitments and any upcoming deadlines. In terms of safeguarding, the firm provides extensive resources to ensure employees feel supported. There are several dedicated points of contact within the company, including HR representatives and wellbeing officers, who are always available to listen and offer guidance. Having these support systems in place has been invaluable in maintaining a healthy balance between personal, academic, and professional responsibilities.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The University of Law has been incredibly supportive throughout the programme. My skills coach (apprenticeship tutor) is always approachable and available whenever I need guidance or support. We also have regular monthly catch-ups where they review my progress, address any concerns, and provide valuable advice to ensure I’m on the right track. The learning resources have been immensely helpful too; we have access to extensive online libraries filled with a wide range of law books, journals, and articles. Additionally, there are frequent learning workshops designed to develop specific study skills, such as effective note-taking, research methods, and even time management techniques. This combination of academic resources and tailored support has made a huge difference to my development during the apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The theoretical knowledge I’ve been gaining on the job has proven to be incredibly useful in my role. When working on a case or transaction, I’m now able to understand legal terminology and grasp the broader context of the task at hand. This has allowed me to approach my work with greater confidence and a deeper understanding of how each element fits into the bigger picture. Likewise, the practical experience I’ve gained through my role has significantly benefited my studies. Being able to apply what I’ve learned in real-world scenarios has made it much easier to comprehend the theoretical aspects, as I can relate them to situations I’ve actively encountered.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are so many opportunities to get involved at the firm. We have regular social events, such as games nights, quizzes, drinks, or even dinners. These events can be organised for the whole office, just the paralegals, or even smaller groups within individual teams, and they take place throughout the year. As an apprentice, I also receive invitations to networking events hosted by other firms. These have been incredibly beneficial, as they provide a chance to connect with others in the same position as me—an opportunity I might not otherwise have. Additionally, there’s a strong emphasis on community involvement and charitable work. I’ve personally been involved in the Read to Write programme, where I visit primary schools to help children develop their literacy and writing skills. The firm also offers other initiatives, such as food bank volunteering, pro bono legal work, and career workshops.

This culture of encouragement has made the transition into corporate life so much smoother and has truly boosted my confidence.
