Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
In my role I create visual dashboard for the BMW Sales department who uses the dashboards and data to steer and drive Sales within the company. Each morning there is a variety of daily tasks I do such as sending our a daily report which goes to most people across the business including the CEO. I regularly interact with front line managers to ensure the dashboards created meets their needs.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my program. It is challenging having to balance working and studying such as challenging degree but I am gaining skills which I will carry with me for the rest of my career. It also gives me the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals so this allows me to build my network outside of BMW.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have a breadth of new skills on my apprenticeship. I have learnt programming languages such as SQL and Python. Through this I have learnt how to build predictive modelling as well as building and querying databases in SQL. I have also learnt how to use the many different functions of excel such as lookups, pivot tables and other neat excel tricks when working with a lot of data. I've also learnt how to use Business Intelligence tools such as QlikSense and Power BI (at a basic level). I've also gained a lot of soft skills such as presenting, communication and managing relationships with the various stakeholders across the business.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My program is extremely organised. I have my entire timetable all the way until I finish the degree in 2027. I know exactly when my exams / assignments are due and I have a dedicated success manager who I can go to for any admin support. I can also organise meetings with my professors at any time if I am struggling with a particular topic. At the start of my apprenticeship, my university provided a welcome week so we can understand the different resources available to us and who / where we can go to for a specific topic.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I feel well supported from my employer. My line manager is very understanding and I have dedicated study day each week which allows me to do my university work. I also who I can go to in HR if I have any questions and they are very quick to answer any queries or questions I may have.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
For each course I have 2 seminars I need to attend. Those seminars are virtual but allows us to speak to our professors on any course questions and we normally go through some course content or practice exam questions. We also can reach out to our professors for a 1-2-1 session in case of any further questions. It is difficult to balance seminars or 1-2-1 sessions especially if it falls on a work day hence time management being vital when studying a degree apprenticeship.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My degree allows me to understand the programming languages better. My role involves some coding and using excel formulas therefore the course gives me these skills. It also teaches me how to best develop an efficient, useful dashboard and the psychology behind colours, the best charts to use etc.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There's many extra curricular activities. There is the Apprentice Newsletter where we create a monthly newsletter about what apprentices are up to across the entire BMW Group UK. This provides opportunity to connect with other apprentices across our site and across the country. We also have professional networking opportunities with our groups on campus such as Unity (who focuses on gender equality), Embrace (who focuses on DE & I) and Connect One which randomly pairs you with someone across the business and you have a coffee catch up to meet and understand what their role. All of these activities gives you ample opportunity to develop a network.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The Group provides excellent benefits to Apprentices. We can lease a BMW or MINI as well other additional benefits such as dental insurance and private healthcare. Aside from the benefits the group views apprentices as future talent for the business therefore there is a lot of support if we have any questions or concerns. Line managers are understanding and are generally very flexible to ensure you get your university work done as well as daily work. There are international opportunities where you can do short placements abroad and sometimes may be lucky enough to visit HQ in Munich for a work trip. The only downside is the location. It is very difficult to get Farnborough by public transport.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
Be yourself, be confident and believe in yourself. Ensure you give yourself enough time to prepare the video interview or if you have to attend an assessment centre. Research the company on the BMW website and LinkedIn. Reach out to current apprentices via LinkedIn. Showcase your drive and personality and show the hiring manager how you can come in and add benefit to the team and business.
