Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work in the social media team for BBC Wales. I’m consistently working editing footage from our TV shows to promote them across our social media channels. There’s also a lot of filming opportunities with influencers for bespoke content that we create.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I’m excited to work every day which is something I haven’t experienced before. I’m always working on exciting projects and with a great team so everyday feels fresh and exciting. There are always opportunities to try new things and develop my skill set.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve developed my skills in:
Camera operation
Lighting
Audio setup and editing
Video production
Narrative structuring
Organisation
Time management
Communication

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship program is very well structured. We have regular learning blocks with our training provider but in between we are left to work with our teams in the BBC.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support I receive from my employer is 2nd to none. I have no doubts that if I have any issues, I know exactly who I can talk to and have assurance that they will help me deal with any issue.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
This is an area that could be improved upon, the trainers that my cohort has been allocated are difficult to work with.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
1/5
I’m currently 6 months into my 18 month apprenticeship and there isn’t a single thing that I’ve learnt through my training provider that has helped me in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of opportunities to get to know your colleagues better and network. There are often social activities being planned as well as networking events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Quite simply, it’s the best job I’ve ever had and for anyone interested in getting into the TV and film sector, I can’t think of a better way to develop your skills and meet some amazing people.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
The best advice I can give is to show your passion. During the interview stages, you may be asked to present ideas/concepts and if you can go above and beyond and show that this is something you really care about you’ll have a good chance of getting on the apprenticeship. Rather than just talking and explaining why you want to be on the apprenticeship, perhaps create some graphics or a presentation. This will show the interviewers that you really care.
