Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role as a data science degree apprentice involves a variety of tasks that have evolved over the course of my apprenticeship. I work four days a week and attend university one day a week. Initially, I focused on fundamental data analysis and data science tasks such as data cleaning and data manipulation. As I progressed into my third year, I began tackling more advanced data science projects. Throughout this journey, I have developed skills in Power BI and have gained proficiency in programming with R and Python.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I thoroughly enjoy my data science degree apprenticeship. One of the main reasons is the dynamic nature of the field; data science is constantly evolving, especially with advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Moreover, the programme offers a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Attending university once a week allows me to stay updated with the latest academic insights, while working four days a week provides hands-on experience with real-world data science projects.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed skills through the modules in university and in the office. I have gained skills in PowerBI and learnt how to program in Python and R. Beyond technical skills, my apprenticeship has also helped me develop important professional skills. I have improved my networking abilities, learned how to effectively participate in and lead meetings, and built confidence in presenting my work and ideas.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is well structured, particularly in terms of the university modules, which are thoughtfully laid out over the course of the three years. However, there is room for improvement in the workplace structure. While I have had the opportunity to work on various tasks, a more tailored approach that aligns with what I am learning at university would be beneficial.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive good support from my employer, and this has been consistent over the three years of my apprenticeship. My employer has provided valuable guidance and resources, helping me navigate both the technical and professional aspects of my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive substantial support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. The university staff are always available to offer guidance and assistance, whether it's through lectures, tutorials, or one-on-one meetings. They provide valuable resources and feedback, helping me understand complex concepts and improve my skills.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My qualification through the training provider is both good and useful. It provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that are essential for my role. However, there are times when it can be challenging to directly relate the academic content to my day-to-day tasks. In these instances, I have to adapt what I learn and find ways to apply it in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many extra-curricular activities available at Unilever. Since I started, I have been involved in playing football weekly, which has been a great way to stay active and socialise with colleagues. Moreover, there is a chance to be part of outreach initiatives where employees can visit schools and colleges to promote apprenticeships.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would definitely recommend Unilever to a friend. The supportive environment and opportunities for professional growth make it an excellent place to work. The apprenticeship programme is well-structured, providing a good balance between academic learning and practical experience.
