Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My department test the prototype propulsion systems for the future BEVs. I have to install and remove the prototype units from the test bed, complete daily inspections the unit, run tests using the automation systems, programme the tests which are requested by another department and work with them to investigate issues with the unit we are testing.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
The work I do in my department is good, there is a lot of technical information to take in and different software which is widely used by other engineering companies and is very beneficial to become proficient in using. It is great having the opportunity to do placements in different departments in JLR to learn different skills and gain exposure to different parts of the business you are interested in. However, regarding the apprenticeship programme and apprenticeship recruitment system itself, it is not very organised or well structured. There are a lot of improvements and changes that should be made to improve the programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many new skills regarding physical activities and learning how to use different equipment the right way. I have gained a lot of knowledge and skills regarding software, working with computers and understanding how to debug issues in an efficient manor. I have also improved some existing skills while working at JLR in my department.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The apprenticeship programme is not well structured. There are too many different groups of people or parties who have influence and authority over how the apprenticeship programme is ran and their actions or tasks which are delegated to us often conflict with each other. When we have questions about the programme mainly regarding what we should be doing and what the correct process to certain things are, the responses often conflict with each other. This makes it impossible to know who is right and who you should be speaking to in relation to the apprenticeship programme.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I receive support and you can get support from different groups of people but because the programme is not well structured, support is not always helpful if depending who I ask I get a very different response.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I get all the support I need and that helps me to understand the course content and achieve the high grades and complete the work on time.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualifications we get from the college helps me perform better in my role but due to the courses that JLR picked for us, a significant portion of the qualifications do not affect my performance in my role. The courses which were useful could have been more in depth. There was much more learning how to answer the specific question for the assignment, rather than learning and understanding the subject content. But at the end of the day, they are free qualifications - as JLR pays for it - and will help for future job applications so I am grateful for being able to complete these qualifications.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes there are many different events and activities to suit peoples interests and are organised and hosted by different communities in JLR but I personally do not attend most of them.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because it is a great opportunity to learn, develop new skills and gain a lot of experience in many different subjects.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
If you do the apprenticeship programme make sure to make the most out of the placement opportunities. Applying to do placement of your choice outside your home team really enables you to take your learning and personal development into your own hands. Placements are something you will only have the opportunity to do during the apprenticeship and can help set yourself up for potential future jobs in the different departments you do the placements in, as you already have some experience in that department and the managers already know who you are.
