Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Finance analyst - Ensuring monthly accounts are an accurate representation of costs incurred, creating accurate forecasting tools to predict what costs will be in future, dealing with ad-hoc tasks to produce financial data required by non-finance management, managing the financial side to transitions to new suppliers, managing an offshore accounting team and developing their skills so they are able to take on basic accounting tasks in future.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
My programme is often quite enjoyable, there are sometimes some tough days yet by and large I enjoy what I do and put a lot of time into ensuring it is done correctly. Generally the vast majority of my day is spent looking at spreadsheets and trying to make them make sense for myself, my team, and others, which is something I have a genuine passion for.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I frequently have to communicate with people from a non-financial background, non-native colleagues for whom English is not their first language, and external suppliers. In all of these cases, a different approach to communication is needed: I have developed my ability to adapt my communication to suit whoever I am talking to.
My digital skills with tools such as Excel have also significantly improved.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The overall programme structure is organised: 4 years, 4 rotations in the business (1 per year) with roughly 20% of my working time provided to study towards two qualifications (CIMA's CGMA and and an additional Masters' degree). That said, sometimes management are poor at keeping to the schedules and often issue somewhat conflicting information, which can impact my studies and my work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer has been very supportive of me throughout my time on the programme thus far, and is open to providing the time necessary to manage the study while also providing a sufficient amount of responsibilities to help me grow and develop. That said, in work-related tasks, I am sometimes left to figure things out for myself, as often there are very few people in the business with any expertise in certain tasks.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My employer has been very supportive of my learning and study throughout my time on the programme thus far, and is always open to providing the time necessary to complete my studies. This means that I will not need to worry about meeting the 20% OTJ hours requirement, as my employer will give me that time automatically.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
1/5
This is a mix - the qualification can sometimes provide some useful context into the reasons why I complete certain tasks in my role, and helps to strengthen my understanding of these tasks. That said, the qualification often assumes that computerised systems do not exist and base learning on how things were done in the past on paper, which does not translate to a modern working environment where all processes are digitalised.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are a great number of opportunities that my employer supports, from Town Hall networking events to sports clubs and religious networks. I have particularly enjoyed being a part of the 5-a-side football network, which is ran by fellow Early Careers employees and provides a great environment to blow off some steam and network with colleagues from other teams, departments, and sites.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
JLR on the whole is a great environment to work in, with lots of supportive and friendly colleagues. The pay is the best of any equivalent level apprenticeship out there, there are lots of opportunities to get involved with both inside and outside of work, and the opportunity to have 2 Level 7 qualifications fully funded by the business is a blessing that cannot be taken for granted.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
Play to your strengths! Be open and honest about who you are as a person and where your strengths lie. Make sure to do lots of practice before taking the psychometric assessments as they will be key to your application, and at interview and presentation just be yourself! The business has a real appreciation for people with some individuality about them.
