Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am a third-year degree apprentice training to be an NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) engineer in one of JLR's vehicle semi-anechoic testing and development facilities. Most of my time in this role is spent instrumenting prototype vehicles with measurement equipment, such as microphones and accelerometers, and conducting tests through an online data measurement system. I spend Monday to Thursday onsite doing this and then we had off to study for university every Friday.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I absolutely love my programme! Even though we didn't get much say in which department we ended up within the company initially, I have been so lucky to end up where I am as everyone is so friendly and welcoming (and I am sure that is the same no matter what department you are in). I enjoy my day-to-day testing work, and the wide range of other opportunities and placements I have been involved in have even further improved my overall experience of the programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt so much during my apprenticeship, ranging from role-specific knowledge and skills required for an NVH engineer, such as how the equipment we use can record and interpret the noise and vibration signals during testing, to more general engineering information from the university, covering topics like manufacturing, electronics, CAD design, and so on.
I have also had many outstanding opportunities outside my usual university and work role commitments, which have helped me develop my skills and knowledge even further. Some key examples include a range of communication and presentation skills I have developed from conducting facility tours and assisting in early career events, as well as broader company and car knowledge from completing placements in other departments such as prototype build and vehicle safety testing.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
While the structure of each department's apprentices will differ based on the manager's preferences and the team's demands, from what I have experienced, everything has been very well structured and organised. In my department, we were given a clear roadmap for different placement opportunities that could be arranged throughout our four years; we also have informal fortnightly meetings to check in and talk about what projects we have been up to and formal check-in and placement discussion meetings every 6 months. Regarding the university side of my apprenticeship, we have block weeks of lectures roughly every 6 weeks. For these block weeks, the timings and rooms for each lecture are communicated at least a week or two in advance. Any lecture resources that will be used, like PowerPoint or questions, are all available online most of the time before the block week; this allows you to see and understand what will be done in these lectures.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We have an extensive support system in place for the apprenticeship, including the JLR early careers team (who oversee all the apprentices), a network of university staff (including university module tutors, course leaders and a specific university apprentice tutor), and within our departments, we have managers and mentors who work directly with us to train and support us in the job role.
Regarding progress meetings, from the work side, we have fortnightly informal meetings to check in and discuss what projects we have been up to and 6-monthly formal check-in and placement discussion. On top of these, as an overall check-in on our overall progress from both the university and work sides, we have formal 'Tripartite reviews' every 3 months.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As I have mentioned, as part of my overall support team above, we have a range of support from our training provider. Our module tutors teach us all the lectures online and during face-to-face block weeks. If there are any questions regarding a particular module, tutors are typically available and willing to help over teams (even when it isn't one of our block lecture weeks).
We also have a course leader and apprenticeship tutor who further support us through the apprenticeship and help us if we face any other issues.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Personally, I have not found that most of what I have been learning as part of my qualification directly links back to my specific job role, with the only links I can find being less obvious indirect links. However, it is worth noting I can still see how the knowledge we learn links back to other departments and the company overall, so even though I don't directly use the knowledge I learn in my role, I have had opportunities to use what I have learnt in my qualification to help me whilst I am on placements in different departments.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are various work communities and university societies we can join, which each have their events and gatherings. Still, it is worth noting from a degree apprentice point, balancing our time between our apprentice, work and university commitments can take up a lot of our time, which limits these opportunities (although generally, it can be made to work if you are willing to put the effort in).
I am a JLR 'Early Careers Ambassador', meaning I attend various school and university events to share my experiences and knowledge of JLR and my apprenticeship. As part of this, I have attended 11 events so far (you can decide which events to come to based on your availability and the event type so there is never any pressure), which was a great extra-curricular opportunity for me, and I had lots of fun.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have really enjoyed every moment so far at JLR and i have found that no matter where you go everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Even though it is such a big company spread over multiple different sites, the atmosphere is very inviting and calm which really has made the difference as someone who came straight out of school.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
If you are looking into applying for a JLR apprenticeship (or any apprenticeship), my most important pieces of advice would be to
FIRST: do as much research as you can, not only research about the company and its cars (which is essential information to have for the interview) but also take some time to research the different levels/ types of apprenticeship (advanced, higher, degree) and what specific pathways/ apprenticeships JLR offer (this is all available on their early careers website), to ensure you pick the apprenticeship best suited for you.
SECOND: BE YOURSELF! From what I have learnt, JLR is not looking for one specific type of person; they want to know what makes YOU unique and what skills YOU could bring to the table. So, never be afraid to be yourself during the interview process.
