Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
Daily tasks and interactions really depend on the time of month. A lot of the time the work can feel quite arbitrary and I don't feel like I'm gaining any real value from it or giving value back to the business. Any routine or repeated work I complete very quickly through learning the processes well.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
It's ok - the culture is very friendly and positive at work which I appreciate. However in my experience, sometimes the apprenticeship can feel like it's a bit of an afterthought with regards to the actual work provided and the integration of apprentices into wider teams. For example, some teams have lots of work readily available for their apprentices, while other teams the workload is really few and far between which feels a bit of a misjustice for people wanting to learn and develop.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have yes, professional scepticism, financial analysis, communication and stakeholder treatment, business acumen, just to name a few.
I wish there were more opportunities to develop soft skills such as presenting and people management however, as this is offered/is less apparent. It's very much a case of you have to drive the opportunities, which can be difficult when you don't have much experience.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
Fairly so - the apprenticeship is structured over 4 years (3 of those being more dedicated towards studying) with the final year available to provide more work experience and as an option for further education (top-up degrees). The roles are rotated once per year, and this process can feel very randomised at first. As above, the role you receive is like a lottery system - you will either get one where there are lots of development opportunities, or one where there aren't.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
There is a quality support network in place who have our best interests at heart, with dedicated early careers teams and boards of managers who dedicate some of their time to helping on and improving the scheme. This helps when you've got any concerns you can feel comfortable approaching, and in my experience the direct line managers have all been approachable people - however the issue is their ability to dedicate time to their apprentices. As a lot of the time they are so busy, it leaves you as an apprentice to work a lot of things out on your own, which can be demotivating.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
In all honesty, I have been lucky enough to not really need much support in my studies so far. However, I am aware that the support is there if needed. There are progress review calls roughly once every 12 weeks that allows the training provider to review progress and the opportunity to raise any concerns.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
As with any qualification, there is lots of it that is relevant, for example in my current role we look a lot at provisions, which is taught in some detail in my qualification. Similarly, there is a lot of information that is completely irrelevant to the job roles but are necessary as to make the accounting qualification comprehensive.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes there are many. I am involved in a social committee for my current team as well as a department-wide team that looks at continuous improvement with a focus on employee satisfaction. At my work there are effectively endless possibilities as far as networking is concerned, I just need to take in more of it.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall it is a solid company to work for. It is not without its faults, and in my experience the apprenticeship definitely hasn't been perfect. However, I still feel lucky to be on this scheme and am making a conscious effort to take more ownership of it and put in action plans to make it better for me going forward.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
- Be yourself. Everyone appreciates authenticity, everyone can spot when someone is lying or exaggerating for effect.
- Research the business well. Understand its strategic aims and its progress towards them, and what potential threats and opportunities lie in the foreseeable future and beyond.
- Show your passion for the business. Recruitment will want to know why you picked JLR specifically over other businesses.
