3.8/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Working in a Service Support role, primarily handling tickets and troubleshooting technical issues. The role involves problem-solving and ensuring smooth system operations.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
While I enjoy the technical aspects of my degree and look forward to more advanced content, the first year includes many business modules that feel less engaging. Being placed in a Service Support role rather than Software Development has made it harder to directly connect my work to my studies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have developed skills in networking within the company, gaining a deeper understanding of internal systems, and enhancing my problem-solving abilities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well-structured, with regular reviews involving my mentor, director, and university to ensure progress. While there is a clear framework in place, there is also some flexibility to shape my career direction based on my interests and goals.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer, including regular check-ins with my mentor and director. There are opportunities for guidance and development, though more tailored support towards my desired career path in software development would be beneficial.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The university provides each student with a skills coach tutor as a key point of contact, offering valuable support and quarterly meetings with both the student and their manager. While this support is helpful, the quality of teaching could be improved to make the content more engaging and effective.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification provides a solid foundation in key concepts, particularly on the technical side, which will become more relevant as the course progresses. However, some business-focused modules feel less applicable to my current role, and the teaching could be more engaging to enhance practical learning.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, including subsidised social events that anyone can organise and weekly sporting activities. As part of the Early Careers team, there are also wider networking events within the company.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The company offers excellent global opportunities, strong career progression, and a scalable role that grows with your development. It also provides great benefits and a supportive environment.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
Regularly check platforms like RateMyApprenticeship and the CGI Early Careers page for opportunities, set up job alerts, and follow CGI on social media to stay updated with company news. Take your time when writing your application, have someone proofread it, and only submit when you're confident in your effort. On assessment day, be yourself and for the interview, prepare by noting key competencies - this will greatly help with the questions. Best of luck!
