Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor in housing maintenance, I manage costs, valuations, and subcontractor payments, ensuring compliance with JCT/NEC contracts and the Building Safety Act 2022. My role involves forecasting, variations, risk management, and liaising with clients, site teams, and stakeholders to ensure financial efficiency and contractual compliance.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
My programme is challenging but rewarding. The workload can be stressful, but I enjoy applying my skills in real-world projects. Seeing my progress and industry impact makes it worthwhile. I know I made the right choice pursuing quantity surveying, and it’s exciting to build a strong career in this field.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed strong skills in cost management, forecasting, and subcontractor procurement. My contract knowledge (JCT/NEC) ensures compliance and risk management. I excel in valuations, variations, and stakeholder engagement, aligning financial and site operations. Additionally, I’ve enhanced my understanding of regulatory compliance, particularly under the Building Safety Act 2022.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My programme is fairly structured, but success relies on taking control of my own learning. University provides a solid foundation with lectures and resources, but independent study is essential. Balancing work and study can be challenging, but the structure supports professional growth while allowing flexibility to develop key industry skills.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer is very supportive, providing guidance, training, and real-world experience that enhances my learning. They encourage development, offer mentorship, and help balance work and study. Their support has been invaluable, making my progression smoother. From my experience, I would highly recommend them to anyone pursuing quantity surveying.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The support from my training provider is reasonable, but experiences vary. Some lecturers are knowledgeable, while others struggle with the material, which can be frustrating and stressful. Resources are available, but self-learning is often necessary. Despite this, the programme provides a solid foundation for progressing toward my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification is directly linked to my role, providing essential knowledge of contracts, cost management, and industry regulations. While some aspects require self-learning, the coursework reinforces practical skills. It helps me understand project finances, risk management, and compliance, ultimately improving my confidence and effectiveness as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are plenty of extracurricular activities, including social events, networking opportunities, and industry-related gatherings. I get involved in everything I can, which helps build relationships and expand my professional network. These activities make work more enjoyable, strengthen team connections, and provide valuable learning experiences beyond my day-to-day role.
