Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a temporary works designer, more specifically in transportation. This involves receiving design briefs from clients and communicating with the site team to attain information, working with co-workers to complete designs, working within tight deadlines and turnarounds.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I started learning about temporary works design from week 1, my co-workers are always supportive and give me all the information and guidance I need. I attend University in Block weeks and they are so fun, meeting other apprentices and learning with them through the whole duration of the apprenticeship.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

In my first year as a temporary works designer I became competent with designing foundations, crane outrigger mats, piling platforms, hoardings, scaffolding, temporary trough crossings, simple propping systems, understanding numerous software to aid with the job, and much more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very organised I have a workplace learning advisor who I have a meeting with him and my manager every 3 months to check up on me, my work is structured, and my Uni weeks feel well organised.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

There is always help whenever I need, I am comfortable to ask anyone in the office for help with designers or use with software.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
We have set lectures at University to aid with our professional qualifications, such as mine is IENG status with the Institute of Civil Engineers, they give us support and help with writing reports and preparing for the end point assessment.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It gives me the knowledge and understanding needed for my role and some practical uses such as surveying and working labs with concrete designs.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I have competed at many strongman competitions, I train in the gym 5-6 days a week and make sure I go on plenty of walks, I also attend webinars online hosted by the ICE to support my personal development.

Why?
Amazing work experience early on and support from the company, there is always room for improvement and internal promotions. They priorities peoples lifestyles and personal development, especially my job I have a flexible working schedule I can chose my start time and I have the option to work remotely.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
Show interest in the company, do your research beforehand, understand the skills needed for the job, never be afraid/put off from asking questions and be yourself, be open and welcoming, communication skills are so helpful.
