As a designer, I'm responsible for how things look (to put it simply). I make sure that the service we're creating e..g, website pages, app screens etc are formatted to make them easy to navigate to provide the user with the best possible experience.
Day-to-day work:
Morning stand-ups with the wider team
Independent work
Design meet-ups to discuss progress/ issues
Sprint planning meetings to map out what we want to achieve in the next two weeks
Sprint retro to discuss how the last two weeks went, any strengths and areas for improvement

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Overall, I really enjoyed my programme and felt like I learned a lot from the experience, both technical and non-technical skills. However, I wish that I was able to experience more in-person training as some of the online training didn't provide a great learning experience and felt like I didn't take much in.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've developed lots of new skills, both soft and hard. I've learnt great communication and stakeholder management skills, as well as how to use lots of different software such as Jira, Confluence, Monday.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My Foundation Manager was very well organised. My group learning sessions were well-planned and we were always given lots of resources to help us. In addition to this, my foundation manager provided me with timely feedback and always gave me a benchmark to compare my progress vs where I should be on the programme.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I was always given my 80/20 split no questions asked. My project team was always very understanding when I needed to take time off for training.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are lots of giveback activities to get involved in. I have been part of countless initiatives, whether they were one-off volunteering activities such as speaking at panel events or Q&A's, to long-term roles on business resource group communities where I would help plan socials. I also attended many Early Professional events that had been organised in collaboration with partner companies. This meant I had the experience of visiting other offices and meeting other apprentices who work at different companies.

Why?
Overall, my experience at IBM has been a positive one. I have learnt what working at a high corporate company is like, have developed so many skills across a variety of areas e.g., design, communication etc., with constant support from my foundation manager and project teams, and have met some incredible people along the way. It has a friendly atmosphere and is a great place to start your career.

Research Gen AI as it is very popular within the company and its future strategy
Attend National Apprenticeship Week/ Skills for Life events which are hosted every year (usually in February) which give you a great insight into the application process, how to ace assessement centres etc.
