Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an apprentice substation design engineer at Balfour Beatty, my role involves designing and developing electrical substations. On a day-to-day basis, I collaborate with senior engineers to create detailed technical drawings and specifications. I also conduct site visits to assess project requirements and ensure compliance with safety standards. Additionally, I assist in preparing project documentation and reports. My role requires a strong focus on both technical accuracy and effective communication within the team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I genuinely enjoy my apprenticeship as an electrical design engineer for substations. The balance between hands-on experience and theoretical learning keeps every day engaging. I’m constantly exposed to new challenges that allow me to grow and contribute meaningfully to real-world projects. The role aligns perfectly with my interests in engineering and sustainability, and I feel truly valued as part of the team. It’s both rewarding and motivating, making the entire experience incredibly fulfilling.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
During my apprenticeship, I have significantly developed both new and existing skills. Studying for my Electrical and Electronic BEng at Sunderland University has deepened my theoretical knowledge, while internal training modules like interface training, primary HV training, and AutoCAD training have enhanced my practical abilities. I have become proficient in using AutoCAD for creating detailed electrical designs and have gained a solid understanding of high voltage systems through primary HV training. Interface training has improved my ability to work effectively with different systems and teams. Overall, these experiences have equipped me with a comprehensive skill set that is essential for my role as a substation design engineer.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is impressively structured, providing a clear roadmap from the beginning. There’s a well-defined blend of on-the-job training and academic learning, which helps tie theory directly to practical application. Regular check-ins, detailed development plans, and consistent feedback ensure I always know what’s expected and where I stand. The structure not only supports my progression but also keeps everything manageable and motivating. It’s a great balance that really sets you up for success.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The support I receive from my employer has been outstanding throughout my apprenticeship. From day one, I’ve felt welcomed and encouraged to grow. My manager and colleagues are always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and share their expertise. There’s a strong culture of mentorship, and regular check-ins ensure I stay on track with my goals. I genuinely feel invested in, both professionally and personally, which makes a huge difference in my development and confidence.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The support from my training provider has been exceptional. Tutors are approachable, knowledgeable, and always ready to help, whether it’s with coursework or understanding complex concepts. They offer flexible assistance and provide regular progress reviews, ensuring I stay on track. Communication is clear and prompt, and there’s a genuine interest in my development. Their encouragement makes a big difference, giving me the confidence to tackle challenges and perform well in both my studies and work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification is directly relevant to my role and has been a key part of improving my performance. The training materials are tailored to real-life scenarios in the electrical design field, which allows me to apply what I learn immediately at work. It strengthens my technical knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. As I progress, I can clearly see how it enhances my ability to contribute effectively to substation design projects and collaborate confidently with colleagues.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are a range of extra-curricular activities available that make the workplace more enjoyable and socially engaging. From team-building days to professional networking events, there’s always something to get involved in. There are also lunch-and-learn sessions, sports clubs, and informal social gatherings that help build strong relationships across departments. These opportunities not only create a great sense of community but also support both personal and professional growth outside of the day-to-day role.
