Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Coordinating contractors, transport, plant equipment and inductions for major projects. Supporting the Senior Operations Manager and Delivery Manager with project progress and challenges.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I changed providers a year in to Derby Uni and it was the best decision I made. Always on hand to help, detailed information provided and assignments relate to the organisation.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my computer literacy skills. I have learnt how to process invoices and clear aged debt. I have learnt how to use project management systems quickly. Understanding drawings and schedules. And many many more.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Derby uni is structured well, clear guidelines and units that assist with assignments. Timetable can be a bit unorganised at times but Balfour Beatty are accommodating which makes it easier. Balfour Beatty support Apprentices with their work and off the job training days.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My Line Manager is a great support and so are other members in the team. I can ask them anything and they will help. From a wider perspective it would have been nice to have a mentor outside of the team in the beginning, wasn't aware this was an option.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

They provide 2 teaching days at the start and then a recall day a few weeks later. This is great because you can focus on one assignment at a time without falling behind. They also provide drop in sessions weekly for any questions. Lecturers are always on hand to help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

When I started the degree I was Business Admin. 2 years later I became Operations Coordinator so I'd say it helped massively. A few of the modules are similar so could be joined up into one to avoid duplication and reduce the degree length.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Balfour Beatty provide a residental trip for the week where Apprentices compete in challenges as part of their off the job training. This is suitable for younger learners, not ideal for older learners. The organisation has networking events all year around to attend and a social committee to encourage engagement with others and the organisation.

Why?
If you join the right team it can be a great experience. Manging workload and study is easy when office based.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Select training provider carefully but note you can switch if it doesn't work for you. Older apprentices don't be afraid to apply, you will be treated like a colleague and not a student. Studying and working is manageable. Be aware promotions while an apprentice do not lead to a pay increase.
