I’m a Balfour Beatty QS apprentice, and I’m really enjoying the role. Day-to-day, I help manage costs, process valuations, and work with subcontractors to keep budgets on track. I also get involved in procurement and contract reviews, gaining great hands-on experience in the industry.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I’m really enjoying my programme because it’s not just helping me develop my skills in quantity surveying, but it’s also allowed me to build great relationships with colleagues and industry professionals. The mix of hands-on experience and learning keeps things interesting, and I feel like I’m constantly growing.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I’ve developed my cost management and procurement skills, gaining a deeper understanding of valuations, contracts, and budgeting. I’ve also improved my communication and negotiation skills by working with subcontractors and clients. Plus, my problem-solving and attention to detail have grown through hands-on project experience.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is really well-structured, with a good balance of on-the-job training and development courses. Opportunities like the Brathay residential experience have been great for building teamwork and leadership skills, while the structured learning ensures steady progress in key areas of quantity surveying.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I've received so much support from my employer, which has made a huge difference in my development. My line manager has been especially helpful and kind, always taking the time to guide me, answer my questions, and ensure I have everything I need to succeed in my role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support from my training provider has been okay, but there have been some challenges. Results have been delayed, which has been frustrating, and the overall teaching could be improved. However, it’s not too bad, and there are still useful resources available to help with working towards my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification provides some useful knowledge, but since my work is in highways and the university content is primarily focused on residential construction, it doesn’t fully align with my role. While some principles are transferable, a lot of the coursework isn’t directly relevant, making it less effective in supporting my day-to-day learning.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, we have commercial away days that are excellent for networking. Additionally, we organize occasional social events and sports teams, providing great opportunities to connect with colleagues and build professional relationships outside of work.
