Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I'm a second year apprentice and I work on large projects like one happening at QMC hospital where E.ON is fitting a whole new heating / cooling system to the hospital. Day-to-day I work using CAD (mainly 2D), to draw up P&IDs (schematics) for heating and cooling systems.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I do enjoy it, out of all the places I looked it definitely is the best one I could have chosen. The work can be slow at times, but when you are fairly new there isn't much that can be done about that for a while. However, now it has picked up and I am enjoying it more.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My presentation skills have grown a lot, as we are encouraged to go back to our schools and other schools to talk about apprenticeships and I really benefitted from that. I have also learnt a lot about what it means to work in a real job and have real responsibilities as an engineer.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is well organised, we have 6 month placements in different areas of the business and we get to choose for the most part where we want to go based on our interests. One opportunity I have had is to work with AI on a large project that looks amazing.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
You are given a mentor and everyone is very supportive throughout your time there. and if needed, there are a lot of support people you can contact, the early careers team is here to look after apprentices and do a really good job at it, I don't think anyone will have any trouble getting support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The University of Nottingham is really good and you can message the lecturers on teams directly to ask questions and when there is something that doesn't seem right (for example if the whole class feels they don't ave enough time for a deadline), it often gets fixed to where you can give good work in instead of rushing it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It's really important now to have a good understanding of both electrical and mechanical as an engineer, and will be increasingly important as well. I get to use my knowledge of both to help in my role, and if i prefer one or the other, i can choose between them as well.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes there are a lot of groups you can join that connect you with other people in the business, which is really good and the Degree Apprentices are like a small community and meet fairly regularly, so if you want to you can.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend E.ON UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I really enjoy it and I think because we take on fairly small numbers of apprentices, they get a much more personal experience. I'm the only one in my year and it has been really good to get so much support from everyone to help me develop. We won't ever really take on loads of people, so I think that personal experience won't go at all.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to E.ON UK?
All degree apprenticeships are competitive, so get plenty of interview experience, try and stand out with some creativity to make the interviewers remember you, show you are passionate about what you are applying for, maybe do extra curricular activities in that area, also financially, I have been able to have opportunities in personal life that I would never have been able to have without doing a degree apprenticeship and I am really setting myself up to be successful in my career.
