Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
Learning how to set and program CNC lathes.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
1/5
Like most jobs it has ups and downs. Currently I am not enjoying my apprenticeship as much as I have in the previous years past due to being singled out.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
2/5
Yes I have learned how to understand engineering drawings and using that I can write programs and set certain machines.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
No structure at all. There is a lack of communication between management on each shift and the apprentices. There is no plan of how often each apprentice will be moved to different machines or checking on progress of training. Essentially I am a skilled worker but on minimum wage.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I have received support when I have had issues outside of work but I do not feel listened to when there are issues in the workplace.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
There is a lack of support from TDR, I do not see my assessor as often as I should.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I don’t believe that the qualification has much relevance to the job that I am doing. I have not really used the skills that I have learned in college in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Plate day at Newcastle racecourse

No
Why?
Lack of communication and organisation. The company seems to be more focused on producing as many parts as possible and disregards the importance of a thorough training program.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to British Engines Ltd?
Don’t.
