Overview of the Experience

Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
5/5
Placed In HR department, creating quizzes surround menopause in the company; also having created a quiz for new starters to complete, surrounding general information on Pearson. Involved with an internship day, participating in fun activities and talking to interns about their experience at Pearson. Created a LinkedIn post about Pearson's RMP qualification, which was posted.
To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
4/5
I think it was a very valuable experience, because it did not only help me develop my professional skills, but also my social and networking skills as I managed to meet a lot of new people (especially the interns) and find out about a day in their lives at Pearson.
How well organised was your work experience?
4/5
It was pretty well organised, and we were given a schedule at the start of the week. However, due to the nature of the work, we sometimes had to deviate and adapt our timings in order to meet certain deadlines. The calendar feature was also very important in order to book times out not only for meetings, but also for individual projects that needed to be completed.
How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
2/5
This experience at Pearson really helped me understand the inner workings of a large business, and how they operate. I managed to also have some time with an apprentice in marketing, which is an interest of mine. However, it would have been beneficial to also have some time with people in finance as I am also interested in that, however, timing complications limited this. Overall, amazing experience and strong insight on to how I want my future career to be structured.
Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
3/5
This was work experience, so naturally, it is unpaid for. However, I did have all my food expenses covered, which is great as it added a sense of warmth and community, and the facilities here at Pearson are great. However, we were also provided with other opportunities, such as the Golden Assessment, which is usually a paid for service.

Skills Development

What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
5/5
- Understanding of how large businesses operate
- Understanding of how to manage time effectively, and how to prioritise certain tasks over others
- How to talk to superiors, regarding deadlines and time management,
- The importance of quick, frequent breaks,
- The importance of punctuality
- How to work well in larger groups and network with people

Company Culture

How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
5/5
I learnt a lot about the company itself as one of our initial projects was to formulate a quiz for new starters about Pearson. Therefore, I managed to utilise the Pearson Hub feature as a source of information, such as for company values. Considering I was placed with a Pearson employee, I had a very strong insight as to their 'day in the life' and it really showed me just how busy some days can be.
Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
5/5
There was a plethora of opportunities, especially early on, as we were invited to meetings where we got to listen in and ask any questions. Furthermore, the intern event on our second day was great as we met 'new starters' essentially, so we got their viewpoint and insight on how it is to work at Pearson.

Recommendations and Advice

Would you recommend Pearson to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Being such a large business, it is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in the large corporate world and its respective environment/setting. Pearson being a learning company also diversifies this, as although they are education based, they have departments in more than you could imagine. They have great facilities and a very clean office, so it is very inviting. Furthermore, the overall atmosphere with fellow colleagues is warming, so it is very welcoming. They are also an international business, so could also provide opportunities to work abroad at their other offices.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pearson?
Read into the company beforehand to get an idea of their values and what to expect. Be prepared to talk to a lot of new people and socialise. If you are working in a demanding department, have an idea of how to manage your time effectively, to not only get the most from the experience, but also ensure good wellbeing.
