Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

To accurately label and dispense prescriptions, to complete patient medication cards
according to departmental procedure, and to provide a safe, accurate and timely service.
This will involve rotational duties in various areas, i.e. Inpatients/Out patients/ Controlled
drugs, ensuring accuracy in entering patient/ward details into registers.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme provided me with the opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills whilst being supported by experienced professionals, who were able to office advice and guidance.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload
Ability to ask questions in a logical manner to ascertain the full facts of a particular enquiry.
Able to work on several issues simultaneously and reprioritise work
Competence in using Microsoft Office including Excel and Word, Windows, JAC and e mails
Understanding of actions and uses of medicines and how to counsel patients on their use

The programme was well structured and placements were tailored around the academic curriculum.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

We were assigned an educational supervisor to support us in putting skills into practice and embedding knowledge. We were also assigned a mentor to provide pastoral care.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

We provided with protected time away from work to attend sessions and complete work associated with the course.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification allowed me to register with the GPhC as a qualified Pharmacy Technician and has provided a platform for my continued professional development.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There was an active social network, with regular meet-ups arranged, meals out and sports events such as rounders in the summer.

There is a good level of support for the apprenticeship, you have the opportunity to work alongside registered professionals and have the benefit of their support throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
Do your research, make sure you are aware of the Trust values and what the role entails and ensure this meets with your individual values.
