Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Mixing with colleagues, helping engineers with tasks such as sending drawings off to sites, printing and scanning designs. Completing training modules in order to develop a greater understanding of my role and job once my apprenticeship is finished. Any other admin tasks that allow us to keep busy and help others.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my programme as it is a gradual and slow learning process which makes it less tense and scary for a new apprentice in the world of engineering. Our daily tasks are not too challenging and we have lots of support for times where it becomes difficult to carry out work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt and developed my communicational skills as I am working in a professional workspace where massive projects take place and are worked upon for contracts etc. My understanding of what it takes to become an engineer has also become stronger as I have followed and learnt from experience colleagues.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is extremely well structured as there is a team which handles and supports the new starters across the board of the company. This is done through virtual events and sometimes in person where new starters are able to meet and share their experiences of the workplace together whilst having fun.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The support I receive from my employer is a good amount and is also extended via older apprentices who take us through any work or training. My employer is very responsive and manages any queries I may have and helps me with any challenging work whilst allowing me to be independent too.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The training provider gives us lots of support as there are many teachers available when I am at them place of education. We are also able to contact these teachers via email and online when at work, for any additional help and they are always responsive/happy to help us.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The learning we do towards the qualification has created a greater understanding for the role I do when at office. This allows me to engage more with colleagues and ask more questions as I know more terms and many different subjects which align with the projects the engineers will do.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, normally on a monthly basis there will be activities ranging from out of work social activities as well as networking events which can also occur on a weekly basis. This has allowed me to interact with the wider company and meet new people which makes work a great place.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a great place to work at for new starters as the management programme is very well structured which means you will be looked after. This can help ease young adults into the world of work which may seem daunting at times. The company takes on many apprentices and graduates which allows you to mix with and not be the only one.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Create a strong resume/CV which can stand out from the rest to the employer. Understand that it is a professional work space and you will need to be independent when it comes to any applications and following up with matters. The application is fairly well put together, so ensure confidence when talking in interviews.
