Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The scheme consisted of 2 days. The first day consisted of presentations and workshops where we were introduced to the firm and some of its practice areas. We also networked with trainees at the firm. On the second day, we were each allocated to a department where we worked with a trainee on live work. For example, I helped to draft and proofread some legal documents.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Although my experience during the scheme was online, I felt like I gained a great insight into Simmons & Simmons. The graduate recruitment team gave an in-depth presentation on the application process and what it's like to train at the firm. Networking with trainees and partners was useful too as I could learn about how lawyers from different stages at the firm felt about working there.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Doing trainee-level tasks like due diligence and drafting documents helped to develop my attention to detail and client-readiness. My commercial awareness and overall legal knowledge also greatly improved by listening to partners speak about current commercial issues and provide insight into growing sectors such as fintech.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at the firm was very friendly and welcoming. I found the partners were charismatic and were keen to share their thoughts and answer all of our questions. My trainee supervisor was very approachable and supportive. It felt like he genuinely cared about my learning and development and took the time out to chat with me whenever I needed.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the Spring Insight Scheme. Although it was only 2 days long, I left with so much new knowledge and newly developed skills that are crucial in pursuing commercial law. The opportunity to take part in real live work was invaluable and really differentiates the firm and scheme from others. I would highly recommend the scheme to people who want a true insight into commercial law and the work involved.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Simmons & Simmons LLP
I would make sure to research Simmons & Simmons thoroughly and to know what makes the firm stand out from others and think about why you would personally want to work there. I would also practice some numerical, logical and critical thinking tests as these are a big part of Simmons & Simmons' application process. Also, practice doing video interviews and prepare your answers to prospective questions ahead of time.
